Lufthansa Group is entering a new era of digital air travel as it prepares to introduce the fastest inflight internet connection currently available to passengers. Starting next week, a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo will become the first aircraft in the group’s fleet to offer the advanced connectivity service, allowing travellers to experience internet speeds above the clouds that can, in many cases, surpass the connections they use at home or in the office.

The new high-speed service is being introduced through a strategic collaboration with Starlink, a leading satellite internet provider. Powered by advanced low-Earth orbit satellite technology, the system is designed to deliver faster, more stable, and more reliable connectivity throughout the flight. Passengers will be able to stream high-quality video content, complete cloud-based work tasks, attend virtual meetings, browse online platforms, and use other data-intensive applications without the limitations traditionally associated with inflight internet.

Lufthansa Group plans to equip approximately 850 aircraft across all its airlines with this next-generation connectivity solution. The large-scale programme will make Lufthansa Group the biggest airline group in Europe to introduce this modern high-speed internet technology across its fleet, strengthening its position in providing advanced digital services for passengers worldwide.

The rollout is being accelerated as the group works to bring the new technology to travellers as quickly as possible. With more passengers relying on digital services during journeys, fast and dependable onboard internet has become an important part of the overall travel experience, especially for business travellers and those who want to remain connected throughout long-haul and short-haul flights.

The Starlink partnership is part of Lufthansa Group’s wider investment strategy focused on modernising its fleet, enhancing passenger comfort, and introducing innovative products and services across the entire travel journey. Alongside investments in new aircraft and upgraded onboard experiences, improved connectivity represents a major step towards creating a more connected and efficient aviation experience.

Through the introduction of high-speed satellite internet, Lufthansa Group aims to provide passengers with a consistent and premium online experience while travelling. The initiative reflects the changing expectations of modern travellers, who increasingly view reliable connectivity as an essential part of their journey rather than an additional service.

As airlines continue to compete on passenger experience and digital innovation, Lufthansa Group’s fleet-wide Starlink rollout marks a significant move towards the future of connected aviation, where travellers can stay productive, entertained, and connected from take-off to landing.

“I am excited to announce the launch of the new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi on board our Group aircraft. With it, we’re making high-speed internet an integral part of the travel experience – across all travel classes and on all Lufthansa Group airlines: That is how we understand premium. By 2029, all of the Group’s approximately 850 aircraft will be equipped with the technology. Our product promise doesn’t end with the seats or the menu – today, connectivity is also an integral part of a truly outstanding onboard experience”, said Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group.

Beyond Lufthansa, the introduction of the new high-speed internet technology is also moving forward across the wider Lufthansa Group network. Other group airlines, including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Eurowings, are currently preparing their fleets for the rollout of the advanced connectivity service.

The upgraded onboard Wi-Fi will allow passengers to enjoy a faster and more reliable internet experience while travelling at cruising altitude. Guests will be able to browse websites, stay connected with online services, and use digital applications throughout their journey. To ensure a comfortable experience for all passengers, the service will operate under specific terms of use developed from customer feedback and passenger surveys.

The guidelines focus on maintaining a pleasant cabin environment. Passengers will be asked to use headphones whenever watching videos or listening to audio content, avoid making voice and video calls during flights, and not use live streaming services from the aircraft. These measures are designed to balance improved digital access with the comfort and expectations of fellow travellers.

The new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service is sponsored by Mastercard, continuing the company’s partnership with the airline group from its previous FlyNet connectivity programme. The collaboration supports the transition towards a more advanced and seamless digital experience onboard.

For eligible passengers, accessing the new internet service will become easier than ever. All Miles & More members and Travel ID users will receive free access to the high-speed Wi-Fi service across every travel class. The initiative reflects Lufthansa Group’s wider commitment to enhancing passenger experience through technology, offering travellers faster connectivity and a more connected journey from take-off to landing.
