Marriott International is set to strengthen its luxury lifestyle footprint in Australia through a new agreement that will bring the Le Méridien brand to Lindeman Island in Queensland’s world-famous Whitsundays. The company has signed a formal agreement with Well Smart Group and La Vie Hotels and Resorts to reopen the island resort as Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort and Spa in late 2027.

The project marks a major new chapter for Lindeman Island, a tropical destination that has remained closed to travellers since 2012. After years away from Australia’s active island resort market, the property is now being prepared for a significant return through a major AU$60 million redevelopment led by Singapore-based real estate firm Well Smart Group.

The reopening will introduce the internationally recognised Le Méridien brand to the Whitsundays for the first time. It will also make Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort and Spa the second Le Méridien property in Australia, adding further strength to the brand’s global portfolio of more than 120 hotels and resorts.

A New Luxury Chapter for Lindeman Island

Located across a beautiful 70-hectare beachfront setting, Lindeman Island offers a natural island environment surrounded by the clear waters and reef-fringed landscapes of the Whitsundays. The redevelopment aims to transform the long-closed resort into a modern lifestyle escape that blends refined hospitality with relaxed coastal design.

Once complete, the resort is expected to become one of the most anticipated luxury openings in Australia’s island tourism sector. Its return will also support the wider appeal of the Whitsundays, a region already known for sailing, beaches, marine experiences, romantic escapes, and access to the Great Barrier Reef.

The redevelopment will focus on creating a premium resort experience for both leisure travellers and event guests. With upgraded rooms, dining venues, wellness spaces, and recreation facilities, the property is being positioned as a full-service island retreat for domestic and international visitors.

La Vie Hotels and Resorts Marks a Major Milestone

The agreement is also an important milestone for La Vie Hotels and Resorts. The company has been appointed to manage the resort, making this its first partnership with Marriott International under the new tripartite agreement.

This role places La Vie Hotels and Resorts at the centre of the property’s next phase. The company will oversee the management and guest experience of the resort once it reopens under the Le Méridien brand. Its involvement is expected to bring operational focus to a property that carries strong tourism potential for Queensland.

For La Vie Hotels and Resorts, the partnership also signals deeper participation in Australia’s luxury hospitality sector. By managing a resort linked to a major global hotel brand, the company is entering a high-profile project that could raise its visibility in the regional hotel management market.

Resort Facilities Designed for Leisure, Wellness and Events

Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort and Spa is expected to feature 200 upscale guest rooms and nine suites. The accommodation will be designed to serve travellers seeking comfort, style, and easy access to the island’s natural surroundings.

The resort will also include two restaurants, a lobby lounge and bar, and large event spaces. These facilities are likely to position the property not only as a holiday destination but also as a potential venue for weddings, retreats, corporate gatherings, and destination events.

Wellness and recreation will play a central role in the guest offering. Planned facilities include a resort-style swimming pool, a fitness centre, Explore Spa by Le Méridien, tennis courts, and a Kids Club. These features will help the resort appeal to couples, families, wellness travellers, and groups looking for a complete island stay.

Guests will also have access to water sports, indoor golf, archery, and other recreational activities. This wide range of experiences is expected to support longer stays and encourage travellers to engage more deeply with the island environment.

A Strong Boost for Whitsundays Tourism

The return of Lindeman Island as a luxury resort destination is expected to add fresh momentum to the Whitsundays hospitality market. The region already holds strong appeal among travellers looking for nature, beaches, sailing, reef access, and premium island escapes. The arrival of Le Méridien will add another internationally recognised name to Queensland’s luxury tourism landscape.

The project also reflects the growing demand for experience-led resorts that combine global hotel standards with a strong sense of place. Travellers are no longer looking only for accommodation. They want design, wellness, dining, nature, and memorable activities in one destination.

By reopening a dormant island property with a major redevelopment and global brand positioning, Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort and Spa has the potential to become a landmark resort for the Whitsundays. When it opens in late 2027, it is expected to restore Lindeman Island to Australia’s luxury travel map and create a new reason for visitors to explore one of Queensland’s most iconic coastal regions.

“This is a truly landmark moment, not just for Lindeman Island, but for La Vie Hotels & Resorts. Working with Marriott International to bring Le Méridien to the Whitsundays marks our first collaboration, we could not be more proud of what that means for this project. The Marriott Bonvoy platform gives Lindeman Island immediate access to a global audience of hundreds of millions of loyal travellers, and Le Méridien’s creative, design-led identity is a natural match for the extraordinary natural beauty we are restoring here. This is the beginning of an exciting new stage for the project, and we look forward to building a strong and enduring business relationship with Marriott International as we bring this iconic Australian destination back to life.” said La Vie CEO Jerry Xu.

“Our vision is to create a world-class island experience that balances exceptional hospitality with the natural beauty and heritage of the Whitsundays. Through the strength of the Marriott Bonvoy platform and Le Méridien’s globally recognised lifestyle positioning, we believe the resort will become a flagship destination for both domestic and international travellers,” he added.“Our first collaboration with La Vie Hotels & Resorts and Well Smart Group is an exciting milestone for Marriott International, which will see us debut the Le Méridien brand in Queensland. We are excited about the potential for Marriott’s leading distribution platforms and Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programme, which now has nearly 283 million members, to elevate the global profile and appeal of this remarkable destination.” says Richard Crawford, Marriott International’s Vice President Hotel Development, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Jack Jia, Director of Well Smart Group said “Securing Le Méridien as our hotel brand for Lindeman Island is a defining moment for this project. Le Méridien’s global reputation for design-led luxury and its celebration of culture and the good life is the perfect fit for what we are creating here in the Whitsundays. This is a destination with a proud history, and together with La Vie Hotels & Resorts and the Marriott Bonvoy platform behind us, we are confident Lindeman Island will reclaim its place as one of Australia’s most iconic resort experiences and take its rightful position on the world stage.”

Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort & Spa is set to become Australia’s second Le Méridien hotel, strengthening the brand’s presence in the country while adding to its worldwide collection of more than 120 hotels and resorts.
