Greece’s tourism had a busy first half of 2026, as the number of tourists coming to the country grew. In fact, the number of visitors and total tourism revenue increased compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, there has been a change in spending behavior as more tourists arrive while spending per tourist decreases.

The latest tourism performance figures highlight a strong demand for Greece as a Mediterranean destination, supported by rising arrivals from European and overseas markets. Between January and June 2026, inbound travel traffic increased by 15.4% to 13.49 million travellers, while tourism receipts climbed by 14.8% to €8.80 billion.

Despite this impressive growth, the revenue landscape has become more complex. Visitor numbers have expanded at a faster pace than spending, showing that Greece’s next tourism challenge will be focused not only on attracting more travellers but also on encouraging higher-value experiences and longer stays.

Greece Tourism Enters a Strong Growth Phase With Millions More International Visitors

The first half of 2026 has demonstrated Greece’s continued strength as one of Europe’s most sought-after travel destinations. The increase in arrivals has strengthened the country’s tourism balance, which reached a surplus of €6.93 billion, compared with €6.01 billion during the same period in 2025.

Growth has been supported by stronger connectivity, increasing demand for Mediterranean holidays and improved movement from major international markets. EU-27 countries played a major role in this expansion, with arrivals from the region rising by 19.3% during the January–June period.

A significant increase has also been recorded through land-based travel routes. Arrivals through road border crossings increased by 49.3%, while airport arrivals grew by 7.3%, showing that Greece benefited from both regional and long-haul travel demand.

However, June revealed a different side of the tourism recovery. Although visitor arrivals increased by 6.9% to 4.92 million travellers, tourism receipts grew by only 1.2% to €3.48 billion. The difference was mainly linked to a 6.2% decline in average spending per trip, indicating that visitors were travelling more but spending less during their stays.

Greece Tourism Revenue Growth Shows Different Trends Across Global Markets

The performance of Greece’s major tourism markets has not been uniform. While some countries delivered strong increases in arrivals and spending, others recorded higher visitor numbers but weaker financial contributions.

During the first half of 2026, receipts from EU-27 markets increased by 10.7% to €4.53 billion, while receipts from non-EU markets grew even faster, rising by 19.7% to €3.86 billion.

The following markets played a major role in shaping Greece’s tourism performance:

Germany Strengthens Visitor Numbers but Spending Falls

The German market highlights the changing behaviour of international travellers in Greece. More visitors are choosing Greece, but spending levels have not matched arrival growth. This indicates a shift in travel patterns, with possible changes in trip length, accommodation choices and visitor expenditure.

France Records a Challenging Tourism Performance

The French market became one of the key contributors behind weaker revenue growth during June. Although Greece continued attracting French travellers, spending levels and travel demand showed signs of pressure.

Italy Emerges as One of Greece’s Fastest-Growing Markets

The Italian market has become a significant growth driver for Greece tourism, combining strong visitor growth with higher revenue contribution. The performance demonstrates the value of neighbouring European markets in supporting tourism expansion.

United Kingdom Continues as a Major Tourism Revenue Source

However, June showed weaker momentum. British arrivals declined by 12%, while receipts dropped by 26.1% to €442.9 million.

The UK market continues to provide significant value for Greece, but the June slowdown suggests that seasonal changes and traveller spending patterns are influencing short-term performance.

United States Delivers Higher Revenue Despite Fewer Visitors

The result indicates that American visitors generated stronger financial value despite lower visitor numbers. Higher spending per traveller helped maintain revenue growth from this important long-haul market.

In June, US arrivals declined by 12.1%, while receipts decreased by 3.7% to €257.8 million.

Greece Tourism Faces New Challenge of Increasing Visitor Value

The first half of 2026 has confirmed Greece’s ability to attract international travellers at a remarkable pace. The country’s tourism sector has benefited from strong demand across European and overseas markets, producing higher arrivals and increased revenues.

However, the decline in average spending per trip has created a new strategic focus for the destination. Growth in visitor numbers alone may not guarantee equivalent financial gains unless travellers spend more on accommodation, experiences, dining, transportation and longer stays.

For Greece, the next stage of tourism development will depend on increasing the value of every visitor experience while maintaining its global appeal. Expanding premium tourism, cultural travel, wellness experiences and year-round tourism opportunities could help strengthen spending levels.

Greece tourism is booming in the first half of the year 2026, with international visitors and revenue recording significant gains.

Greece’s H1 2026 performance therefore is a mixed blessing, with the country witnessing a tourism explosion that has gained it millions of additional visitors, but the rising visitor numbers may be less impactful on the country’s economy due to shifting spending patterns.
