Vatican City is investing €100 million to create renewable energy sources across Europe. As part of its efforts to be more eco-friendly, land-locked Vatican City is launching its largest renewable energy project to date. The small European country wants to completely change how it makes and uses energy to become a more sustainable country and meet its goal of being carbon neutral. Vatican City has limited land at its disposal (only about 44 hectares or 108 acres) but wants to change that by creating one of the largest agrivoltaic (a solar farm that is also used for agriculture) power plants in Europe. If complete, this plant would be 90 megawatts and provide a significant amount of renewable energy to the European continent.

The solar installation will not be built within Vatican City itself because the territory is too small to accommodate such a large-scale development. Instead, the project will be constructed on Vatican-owned land at the Santa Maria di Galeria estate, located outside Rome.

The estate covers between 1,050 and 1,100 acres, making it significantly larger than Vatican City itself. While the Vatican’s sovereign territory measures about 109 acres, the selected site provides enough space for a large renewable energy installation without affecting the historic character of the city-state.

Vatican’s Small Territory Drives Search for Larger Renewable Energy Space

The size difference between Vatican City and its planned solar site highlights the unique challenge faced by the tiny state. Vatican City has a population of around 800 residents, although thousands of employees travel into the territory daily for work.

The country’s limited land availability means large infrastructure projects cannot be developed within its borders. The Santa Maria di Galeria estate offers the necessary space for the Vatican to expand its renewable energy capacity while maintaining its environmental objectives.

The planned facility is expected to deliver between 80 and 90 megawatts of electricity. This capacity will be used primarily to meet the Vatican’s own energy requirements, including electricity demand from its buildings and communication infrastructure.

The project is not intended to support industrial operations or large technology facilities. Instead, it focuses on creating energy independence for a small sovereign state while supporting a broader global message on sustainability.

The scale of the development is significant when compared with the Vatican’s current renewable energy efforts. However, its purpose remains very different from large-scale energy projects being developed for artificial intelligence data centres and technology infrastructure.

From Rooftop Solar Panels to a Major Agrivoltaic Energy Network

The Vatican has already taken steps towards renewable energy adoption. In 2008, thousands of solar panels were installed on the roof of the Paul VI Audience Hall, creating one of the first major renewable energy initiatives within the Vatican.

That rooftop solar system generates approximately 300 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. The new agrivoltaic facility would represent a dramatic expansion of the Vatican’s clean energy capacity, producing hundreds of times more electricity than the earlier installation.

Unlike traditional solar farms that focus only on electricity production, the new project will combine solar panels with agricultural use. This approach, known as agrivoltaics, allows renewable energy generation and farming activities to operate together on the same land.

Agrivoltaic systems are increasingly being considered as a way to balance renewable energy development with land conservation. Solar panels can provide shade for certain crops, help manage land use and create additional economic and environmental benefits.

For the Vatican, the project is not only an energy investment but also part of a wider environmental strategy aimed at reducing emissions and encouraging sustainable practices.

Renewable Energy Plan Supports Vatican’s Long-Term Climate Goals

The project demonstrates how renewable energy development is no longer limited to large countries or major corporations. Smaller organisations and territories are also investing in clean energy solutions to reduce emissions and improve sustainability.
