Rio and Sao Paulo witness upsurge in tourism

Two of the major cities in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, have witnessed an upsurge in the tourism sector, with the world gradually emerging from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.


As per the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism in Rio de Janeiro has augmented by 6.2 percent when matched with the year before, thereby taking tourism’s input to Rio’s GDP to 3.5 percent.

Moreover, tourism added more than 2.3 percent to the GDP of Sao Paulo, signifying over 14.2 percent of the total economy in Brazil.


The newest report of WTTC on the Economic Impact of Cities shows that Latin America is on its way to confident development given that Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have enriched Brazil’s GDP along with employment levels.


More precisely, in 2019, the input of the tourism segment to Rio de Janeiro’s GDP signified three percent of the total economy in Brazil – accounting for $3.2 billion. Even so, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it reduced by 20.6 percent fall. Nevertheless, it further improved by 28.8 and 6.2 percent in 2021 and 2022, respectively.


Additionally, the level of jobs consistent with the tourism sector improved by 8.5 percent when matched with 2021, which gives rise to more than 172,740 direct jobs, making up 3.1 percent of the entire jobs in Rio de Janeiro.


Besides, global tourists in Rio de Janeiro paid almost €380 million last year.
