Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has unveiled a new direct route between Bandar Seri Begawan and Chennai, India, enhancing connectivity in the region and fostering closer ties between Brunei Darussalam and India. The inaugural flight touched down at Chennai International Airport on November 5, 2024, celebrated with a traditional water cannon salute, marking an exciting expansion for RB’s global network.
In celebration of this launch, several events took place in Chennai in collaboration with the Brunei High Commission, Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), and Brunei Tourism. During the launch events, a press conference provided insights into the new route’s significance for both nations, highlighting Brunei’s unique offerings and the mutual benefits of enhanced connectivity. This introduction marks a milestone in deepening bilateral ties, particularly in tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.
An investment seminar organized by BEDB invited Indian business leaders to discover Brunei’s favorable investment climate. Operating three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, RB’s new route is serviced by the modern Airbus A320neo, known for its quiet operation and fuel efficiency. A codeshare partnership with Air India allows passengers seamless connections from Chennai to other destinations in RB’s network, including Melbourne, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore, Seoul, Manila, and Taipei.
Since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1984, Brunei and India have shared a rich partnership rooted in shared values and a commitment to development. This new route aligns with India’s vision for the ASEAN-India Tourism Year 2025, promoting increased travel, business exchanges, and cultural interactions.
The Chennai route highlights RB’s dedication to expanding its footprint in India, providing travelers with an efficient and comfortable experience on the Airbus A320neo and welcoming them with Brunei’s renowned hospitality.
