Royal Caribbean International has revised the Mediterranean itinerary for its upcoming cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, ahead of the vessel’s 2026 debut by replacing Alicante with La Spezia, Italy, to enhance destination experiences and finalize operational planning for the ship’s inaugural European season. The updated voyage will now give passengers expanded access to famous Italian attractions near Florence and Pisa while strengthening the cruise line’s Mediterranean deployment before the ship officially enters service.

Royal Caribbean International has introduced changes to one of the early itineraries planned for its upcoming mega cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, as preparations continue for the vessel’s launch in Europe during 2026. The updated schedule impacts an eight-night Western Mediterranean cruise departing on July 25, 2026, which forms part of the ship’s inaugural summer season.

Under the revised itinerary, the vessel will no longer stop in Alicante on Spain’s southeastern coast. Instead, the cruise will now include a call at La Spezia in northern Italy, a destination known for its proximity to several famous cultural and historical attractions. The adjustment comes as Royal Caribbean continues refining port operations and voyage schedules ahead of the ship’s entry into service.

The modified route now includes visits to Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Naples, and La Spezia before the voyage concludes in Civitavecchia, the principal cruise gateway for Rome. The revised itinerary shifts more focus toward Italian destinations, giving passengers greater access to renowned cities and coastal regions across the Mediterranean.

La Spezia is considered one of Italy’s most strategically located cruise ports due to its close connection to Florence and Pisa. Cruise passengers often use the destination as a starting point for excursions to Tuscany, where they can explore historic cathedrals, Renaissance landmarks, museums, and world-famous architecture. The port also offers access to the scenic Ligurian coastline and nearby villages along the Italian Riviera.

Because of local port arrangements, guests aboard the Legend of the Seas will reach shore through tender operations rather than direct docking. Smaller boats will transport passengers between the ship and the harbor area. Royal Caribbean has indicated that travelers using foldable wheelchairs and capable of taking a few independent steps should be able to use the service. However, guests who rely completely on mobility devices and cannot board the smaller boats independently may encounter limitations during the disembarkation process.

The itinerary revision arrives while the Legend of the Seas is still being built at the Meyer Turku facility in Finland. The shipyard is internationally recognized for constructing some of the cruise industry’s most advanced vessels. Once completed, the new ship is expected to begin operations in early July 2026 as the third vessel in Royal Caribbean’s rapidly growing Icon-class lineup.

The Icon-class project represents a major expansion of Royal Caribbean’s next-generation cruise fleet. These ships combine large-scale entertainment venues, water attractions, family-focused recreation zones, upgraded accommodation categories, and extensive dining concepts designed for modern cruise travelers. The company has also emphasized the use of cleaner energy technology throughout the class.

Like its sister vessels, the Legend of the Seas will operate using liquefied natural gas, commonly known as LNG. The fuel system is intended to reduce emissions and improve environmental performance compared to older cruise ship technologies. The introduction of LNG-powered vessels reflects broader changes across the cruise sector as operators continue investing in sustainability initiatives and fuel-efficient ship designs.

After completing its inaugural Mediterranean season, the ship is scheduled to relocate to Port Everglades in Florida for the 2026-27 winter cruise program. From the United States, the vessel is expected to operate Caribbean voyages during the peak winter travel season, expanding Royal Caribbean’s capacity in one of the world’s busiest cruise regions.

The Mediterranean continues to rank among the strongest global cruise markets, drawing high passenger demand during the summer months. Cruise companies are increasingly deploying newer and larger vessels across Spain, Italy, and other European destinations as interest in multi-country voyages continues to rise.

Royal Caribbean International has updated the Mediterranean itinerary for Legend of the Seas ahead of its 2026 launch by replacing Alicante with La Spezia, Italy, to improve destination experiences and support final operational planning for the ship’s inaugural European season.

Royal Caribbean’s decision to alter the July 2026 itinerary highlights the ongoing adjustments often made before a ship officially enters service. Cruise operators regularly revise schedules during the final planning stages to improve operational efficiency, coordinate port availability, and enhance destination experiences for passengers before the inaugural voyages begin.
