In the 13th Plan, the dzongkhag places significant emphasis on advancing tourism as a cornerstone of its development goals. The newly introduced SAMJONG brand highlights a commitment to sustainable, community-focused tourism. Key initiatives include targeted marketing campaigns, skill development programs, and capacity-building activities designed to attract domestic, regional, and international tourists.
The tourism strategy centers around unique local experiences, featuring natural attractions like waterfalls, bird-watching opportunities, and showcasing agriculture and livestock products.
To boost visibility, the dzongkhag has rolled out a comprehensive tourism brochure, detailed promotional materials, and an informative Wikipedia page to strengthen its presence in the digital space.
Samdrupjongkhar Poised for Ecotourism Growth
With its strategic position as the gateway to eastern Bhutan, tour operator Dechen Lhamo sees Samdrupjongkhar as a potential hub for ecotourism. However, she emphasizes the need to improve basic amenities along the Trashigang-Samdrupjongkhar highway and within the dzongkhag to support this vision.
Tourist arrivals in Samdrupjongkhar have historically been low, with 1,937 visitors recorded in 2018 and 1,721 in 2019. Looking ahead, the dzongkhag has set an ambitious goal of attracting 4,000 tourists by 2029, with plans for continued growth in the years that follow.

Currently, the majority of visitors are regional tourists, though international arrivals are gradually increasing. On average, tourists spend one day and night in the region. The dzongkhag aims to extend this stay by three additional days, significantly boosting the total number of nights spent in the area.
By the conclusion of the 13th Plan, the dzongkhag expects to create over 170 jobs and expand tourism-related businesses to 40. To achieve these goals, a budget of Nu 298.84 million has been allocated for tourism development projects.
By December of last year, the Darranga entry point in Assam facilitated the arrival of 41 international tourists and 113 regional visitors to Samdrupjongkhar, all contributing through the Sustainable Development Fee.
