Operational Excellence and Low Cancellation Rates
A key factor behind SAS’s success is its strong operational discipline throughout 2024. The airline maintained an exceptionally low cancellation rate of under 1%, well below the industry average of 1.6%. Out of 16,026 scheduled flights, fewer than 150 were canceled. Additionally, SAS recorded an 81.20% on-time arrival rate and a 79.43% on-time departure rate, further reinforcing its reliability.
Climbing the Global Rankings
SAS’s commitment to punctuality placed it in ninth position worldwide, ahead of United Airlines and just behind Iberia. This achievement highlights the airline’s focus on efficiency and customer satisfaction, helping it gain recognition as one of the most reliable carriers.

Strategic Changes Under New Leadership
In 2021, Anko Van Der Werff took over as SAS’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with a vision to transform the airline. His “SAS Forward” strategy prioritized cost-cutting, renegotiating labor agreements, increasing revenue through secondary sales, and investing in digital transformation. The airline also introduced new routes, such as Copenhagen to Bangkok, and emphasized punctuality as a core performance metric.
Rebounding from the Pandemic
SAS faced financial struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic, with significant drops in passenger numbers and revenue. By the end of 2021, it had carried 7.38 million passengers, marking a steep decline of 39.44% in passenger revenue and a 40.07% drop in total passengers compared to the previous year.

With strong operational performance, a clear strategic vision, and a focus on efficiency, SAS is poised for continued growth and success in the years ahead.
