The ongoing progress at Munich Airport is evident in the 2023 traffic statistics, showcasing a notable increase in passenger numbers by five million compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 37 million. With the current passenger volume, the airport has achieved approximately 80% of the pre-crisis record set in 2019. Aircraft movements saw a six percent rise from 2022, surpassing 300,000 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor reached a record 81.3 percent, crossing the 80 percent threshold for the first time since the airport’s inception.
In 2023, the primary focus of passenger development centered on traffic originating from or destined for Munich, experiencing a 22 percent increase from the previous year. Transfer passengers, crucial for hub traffic, also recorded double-digit growth at 11 percent.
With connections to 219 destinations in 64 countries, Bavaria’s aviation hub has reestablished strong links with the global route network. In 2023, the airport was serviced by 99 airlines, including nine exclusively dedicated to air freight.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH: “The strong growth in passenger numbers in 2023 shows how well the aviation industry is recovering in Munich. This positive development is a sign of the high demand for air travel among the public and the business community alike.”
The thriving traffic development at Munich Airport also positively impacted air freight, witnessing a seven percent increase in freight volumes in 2023, totaling around 280,000 metric tons.
