Storm in Southern California set to disrupt holiday travel in Midwest

A winter storm system dropping rain and heavy snow in the Southern California mountains is on its way to sweep into the Plains and Midwest this weekend, adding to holiday season travel woes in some areas.

Heavy snow on Christmas night brought traffic to a standstill on Interstate 5 in the mountains north of Los Angeles, forcing authorities to close the freeway at one point.

Weather.com warns of possible “significant travel difficulty” through the passes of Southern California and along Interstate 40 in northern Arizona and Interstate 25 north of Albuquerque.

“After bringing a swath of snow from Arizona and New Mexico to Colorado at the end of the week, snow will streak across the central and northern Plains by Saturday,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff said.

As the storm system collides with cold air pushing southward out of Canada, Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska were bracing for a mix of ice, sleet and snow.

AccuWeather.com said parts of Nebraska, the eastern Dakotas and extreme western Minnesota could face blizzard conditions.

By early next week, the storm system could bring rain to the Ohio Valley and East Coast, hitting weekend travellers along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington D.C. Freezing rain, sleet and snow is likely in northern New England and upstate New York.

The timing of storm’s arrival in the East Coast is critical for its impact on holiday traffic, particularly if the heaviest rain holds off until Sunday night.

The National Weather Service said the storm could dump up to a foot of snow in some parts of the southern Rockies.
