TAAG Angola Airlines is set to launch direct flights between Luanda and Houston, marking a significant move in the airline’s ongoing expansion strategy. The carrier has officially submitted a request to the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate this route, with approval pending on the acquisition of Category 1 certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is essential for meeting U.S. safety standards.

This bold step comes as part of the U.S.-Angola Open Skies Agreement, finalized in October 2024, which aims to foster enhanced air connectivity between the two nations. The agreement is expected to open new avenues for both trade and travel between the U.S. and Angola.

To support this new route, TAAG is modernizing its fleet with the addition of four Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including two 787-8s and two 787-9s. The first of these, a 787-8, was delivered in January through a sale and leaseback agreement, and it will replace the airline’s aging Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. These new Dreamliners are designed for long-haul efficiency, making them perfect for the 7,636-mile journey from Luanda to Houston.

TAAG’s current fleet already includes a mix of wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 737-700, along with regional options like the Dash Q400 and Airbus A220-300. The airline’s cargo division also operates a converted Boeing 737-700, with another 737-800F planned for delivery in 2025. In addition, the airline took delivery of its second Airbus A220-300 on March 14, 2025, further enhancing its fleet.

With these significant fleet upgrades and the introduction of direct services to Houston, TAAG Angola Airlines is poised to expand its footprint in the U.S. market and further strengthen the ties between Angola and the United States.
