Tamil Nadu to target international travellers to revive tourism

The whole world is working towards reviving tourism post COVID–19 pandemic, and with world travel gaining momentum once more, India again welcomes oversea visitors. Tamil Nadu, among all other states in India, is gaining a lot of healthy attention from foreign tourists. The state has gathered interests from countries like Australia, Thailand and Brazil. Before this, most foreign tourists to Tamil Nadu were from countries like France, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Italy, UK and US.

In the case of Tamil Nadu, it’s the heritage and spiritual tourism that catches a lot of foreign interest. Places like Puducherry,Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram and Madurai are hubs for heritage and spiritual tourism.

The state tourism is now trying to bring in wildlife tourism in focus, along with heritage and spiritual tourism. There are a total of nine national parks in Tamil Nadu – Mudumalai National Park, Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Mukurthi National Park, Guindy National Park, Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary, and Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve.

Except for a few, most of these parks see lesser footfall. Bringing them in focus could become a big game changer.

Also, the upcoming 44th Chess Olympiad, which is expecting visitors from more than 150 countries, can be a great opportunity to publicise various tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu. Special hotel deals and international fairs and pushing rural tourism can be good initiatives as per the tourism department officials.
