TAP Air Portugal, together with Portugália Airlines, has reached a transformative milestone in aviation sustainability by earning the coveted IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification. This achievement signals a bold step forward in their commitment to reducing environmental impact and integrating sustainability into their operational DNA.

The IEnvA certification, rooted in the globally respected ISO 14001 standard, recognizes the airlines’ creation of a robust environmental management system. This system ensures that eco-friendly practices are seamlessly embedded into their global flight operations and corporate facilities in Portugal. By achieving this certification, TAP Air Portugal and Portugália have positioned themselves as trailblazers in redefining how airlines can balance growth with environmental responsibility.

At the heart of this success is a comprehensive Environmental Policy designed to address key environmental challenges. The certification process’s first phase focused on high-impact areas, reflecting the airlines’ determination to tackle pressing environmental issues head-on while setting a precedent for the aviation industry.

This achievement underscores TAP Air Portugal and Portugália’s shared vision of a sustainable future, where innovation and ecological stewardship go hand in hand. It is a call to action for the aviation industry to prioritize sustainability and take decisive steps toward minimizing its ecological footprint.

With this milestone, TAP Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines are not just making history—they are paving the way for a greener, more responsible future in global aviation.

“This certification represents an important step in our ongoing sustainability journey. We are committed to leading by example, reducing the environmental impacts of our operations and promoting more responsible aviation,” says Luís Rodrigues, CEO of TAP Air Portugal. “This is recognition of the joint work of our teams and TAP’s ongoing commitment to the future of the planet.”

Achieving the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification is just one of many steps TAP Air Portugal has taken to solidify its commitment to sustainability. Throughout 2024, the airline advanced its fleet renewal and modernization program, replacing older aircraft with newer, more fuel-efficient models that significantly reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, TAP has transitioned its operational and corporate vehicle fleet to electric and hybrid models, complemented by the installation of electric charging stations at the TAP Campus, which are also available for employees.

One of TAP’s standout initiatives is the Sustainable Cabin Project, developed in partnership with Cateringpor. This program focuses on recycling waste generated on flights arriving in Lisbon, with active participation from cabin crew members who play a vital role in ensuring its success. Enhancing this effort, TAP has introduced reusable and recyclable utensils in economy class on long-haul flights, further minimizing waste.

This year also marks a significant milestone in TAP’s commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The airline is adopting SAF in alignment with European Union regulations, incorporating a two percent SAF blend in refueling operations at airports across the EU, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Despite its higher cost, SAF represents a critical step toward reducing aviation’s environmental footprint. To offset the added expense, TAP has introduced a SAF surcharge for flights departing European airports (excluding domestic flights), ranging from two euros for economy class within Europe to 24 euros for intercontinental business class.

The achievement of IEnvA certification highlights TAP Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines’ unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship. These efforts align with the “4thefuture” concept, which underscores the airlines’ commitment to continuous improvement in environmental performance. Together, these initiatives reflect a bold vision for a more sustainable future, benefiting both the aviation industry and society at large.
