Cabo Verde has gone from a familiar European sunshine escape to a destination attracting a much wider global audience, with travel searches exploding after the country’s breakthrough performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. US Google searches for “Cabo Verde vacation” surged by more than 5,000%, while Expedia recorded an 805% year-on-year increase in travel interest from the United States. TUI also reported that searches for Cabo Verde doubled compared with June 2025. The numbers are striking, but the bigger tourism story is where that curiosity is coming from. The United Kingdom, Portugal and Germany remain core markets, while North American and Asian interest is opening new opportunities for the Atlantic archipelago.
Cabo Verde’s football success has become an unexpected tourism visibility engine.
The country became the smallest nation by population to reach the 2026 World Cup knockout stage and attracted international attention during its campaign. Its narrow 3–2 defeat to Argentina after extra time generated further global exposure, with the country’s beaches, volcanic landscapes and Creole culture suddenly appearing in front of audiences far beyond its traditional European visitor base.
Google search data subsequently showed “Cabo Verde vacation” becoming a breakout search term in the United States, with interest exceeding Google’s reported 5,000% threshold. Because Google Trends caps breakout growth at more than 5,000%, the precise increase above that level is not available from the platform’s public display.

That distinction matters. The widely repeated 5,000% figure represents a search-interest ceiling rather than a precise measurement of the total increase.
Expedia’s data provides another measurement of the surge.
The travel company reported an 805% year-on-year increase in travel interest for Cabo Verde in its 2026 Island Hot List, with the destination identified as one of the islands experiencing rising global traveller attention. Expedia connected the increase to the visibility generated by the major international football tournament.
The company’s methodology used global flight searches made between 22 September 2025 and 22 March 2026, comparing searches for 2026 travel with the equivalent period a year earlier.

Expedia’s US-focused search data therefore adds a measurable commercial signal to the much larger Google breakout figure.
European travel demand remains crucial, but the latest search behaviour is expanding beyond the continent.
TUI, one of the major tour operators selling Cabo Verde holidays, recorded searches for the destination at twice the level seen in June 2025, according to reporting following the World Cup surge.
The development is particularly relevant because European travellers have traditionally supplied the majority of Cabo Verde’s tourism demand.
Official statistics show that the United Kingdom was Cabo Verde’s largest source market in 2025, accounting for 29.3% of non-resident hotel arrivals and 33.5% of overnight stays. Portugal, Germany, France and Belgium-Netherlands followed among the leading markets.
The United States remains a comparatively small source market for Cabo Verde, which makes the recent search spike particularly notable.
The destination welcomed 1,248,052 hotel guests in 2025, with non-residents accounting for 95.5% of arrivals. Yet the traditional market structure remained heavily European.
The latest US search growth therefore represents emerging interest rather than an established visitor pipeline.
For Cabo Verde, that distinction creates a new tourism opportunity: converting sudden digital awareness into flight bookings, hotel stays and longer-term destination demand.
The search surge has not been limited to North America.
Interest from Japan increased by 110%, according to reporting tracking the post-World Cup tourism effect. The increase is significant because Japan has historically represented a much smaller visitor market for Cabo Verde than European countries.
Growing Asian awareness gives Cabo Verde another potential source of long-haul demand, particularly for travellers interested in distinctive island destinations, culture, beaches and outdoor experiences.
Cabo Verde offers several distinct tourism experiences across its islands.
Sal is known for beaches, water sports and resort tourism, while Boa Vista combines expansive sandy coastlines with desert-like landscapes and marine experiences.
São Vicente offers music, Creole culture and Mindelo, the country’s cultural hub. The island hosts the Baía das Gatas music festival and provides access to beaches including Salamansa and São Pedro.
Santiago, home to the capital Praia, offers historical attractions, markets and cultural experiences, while Santo Antão is known for dramatic mountains and hiking landscapes.
Cabo Verde’s official tourism statistics show that Sal accounted for 57.7% of hotel arrivals in 2025, followed by Boa Vista at 24.4%, Santiago at 8.1% and São Vicente at 4.4%.
International visitors can reach the islands through several airports, including Amílcar Cabral International Airport on Sal, Aristides Pereira International Airport on Boa Vista and Cesária Évora Airport on São Vicente.
The local currency is the Cape Verdean escudo, while Portuguese is the official language and Cape Verdean Creole is widely spoken.
