Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI), in collaboration with Boeing and GE Aerospace , unveiled today its decision to procure 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft equipped with GEnx engines, with the option to expand the fleet to a total of 80 Dreamliners. This announcement was made during the Singapore Airshow 2024.

THAI emphasized that this order comes with the added benefit of the airline being able to switch between various models within the Boeing Dreamliner Family, granting it the necessary flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing market dynamics. Additionally, THAI has secured a pathway towards acquiring Boeing 777X aircraft as part of this agreement, potentially augmenting its fleet with enhanced range, capacity, and performance capabilities. The seamless interchangeability between Dreamliner models and B777X offers THAI strategic advantages in optimizing route planning, enhancing capacity, and improving operational efficiency. Leveraging this flexibility, THAI is well-positioned to tackle future challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities.

“Thai Airways’ strategic investment in the 787 Dreamliner builds on our long-standing partnership and signifies the airline’s commitment to operate a modern, efficient and flexible fleet,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “This significant order will support Thai Airways’ ability to meet demand, foster tourism and trade, and create further opportunities for this carrier.”

“To accomplish the Company’s carbon neutral goals by 2050, the 45 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be equipped with GEnx engines which are known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact. Furthermore, we are confident that the acquisition of the 787 Dreamliners will ultimately benefit our customers and support the growth of our country’s economy.” said Chai Eamsiri, THAI CEO.

According to data from its manufacturer, the GEnx engine family, which entered service in 2011, has accumulated over 50 million flight hours. It stands as GE’s fastest-selling high-thrust engine in history, with nearly 3,000 engines currently in service and on backlog, including spares.

“GE Aerospace is proud to add Thai Airways to the list of leading airlines that have chosen the proven performance and superior efficiency of the GEnx engine to power its new 787 Dreamliners,” said Russell Stokes, President and CEO, Commercial Engines and Services, GE Aerospace. “We look forward to working together to introduce these engines into Thai’s fleet.”

The significant acquisition underscores THAI’s dedication to sustainable, enduring expansion of its fleet, aimed at delivering top-notch air travel experiences to its customers. Over the course of ten years, THAI will integrate 45 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners into its fleet, with deliveries slated to commence in 2027.

As a flagship carrier representing the nation, THAI is assured that its strategic long-term vision will contribute positively to the national economy and tourism industries. Moreover, it will further solidify Bangkok’s status as a premier global hub for aviation and tourism.
