The Tokyo metropolitan administration is set to inaugurate what is anticipated to be the globe’s most extensive projection mapping spectacle, starting in late February. This visual feast will light up the night sky on one of the twin towers that comprise its headquarters, located in the vibrant Shinjuku district, a statement from the government disclosed recently.

In a bid for global recognition, the Tokyo authorities have submitted an application to Guinness World Records, hopeful that the year-long spectacle on one of the city’s most iconic structures will secure the title of the world’s largest projection mapping display.

Destined to captivate both tourists and local residents, the complimentary exhibitions will kick off on February 25, illuminating the eastern facade of the 48-story Main Building No. 1. The projections will span an impressive area of approximately 14,000 square meters, stretching from the building’s fourth to its 32nd floor, measuring around 127 meters in height and 110 meters in width.

The schedule released for the period up to April reveals that the shows will light up every evening at 7 p.m., with presentations happening at 30-minute intervals and each lasting between 10 and 15 minutes. The content of the projections will vary on weekends and public holidays, according to the Tokyo government.

A special event is planned for the show’s inaugural evening, featuring live performances and a ceremony to mark the Guinness World Records certification, taking place in the plaza at the base of the tower. Attendees can apply for tickets to this opening event online.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, speaking at a press briefing on Friday, expressed her aspiration for the projection mapping displays to emerge as a novel attraction, drawing visitors from both Japan and abroad to experience this spectacle at least once.

This initiative is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourist destination, adding a new dimension to Tokyo’s already vibrant cultural and entertainment landscape.
