The winter season in Dhofar witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism, with visitor numbers soaring by 18.4%, according to data from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. From October to February, over 35,000 travelers flocked to the governorate, drawn by its diverse attractions and cultural richness.

A significant influx of tourists arrived via charter flights from European countries, reflecting Dhofar’s growing appeal on the international stage. Salalah Airport is poised to welcome a total of 239 charter flights during the current winter season, further bolstering connectivity and accessibility for visitors.

The hospitality sector experienced a surge in demand, with hotels, particularly 4- and 5-star properties, boasting occupancy rates exceeding 95%. This surge underscores the allure of Dhofar as a premier tourist destination, offering luxury accommodations and unparalleled experiences amidst breathtaking landscapes.

Khalid bin Abdullah al Abri, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar, emphasized the importance of ongoing tourism projects to enhance visitor experiences across the governorate. Collaborative efforts between the ministry and Dhofar Municipality aim to develop mini tourist oases, with the inaugural project, Hushir oasis, slated for completion this year.

Initiatives to enhance tourist attractions include the development of the Haywar Cave in Jebel Samhan and upgrades to adventure tourism sites, catering to thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts. Furthermore, plans are underway to provide space at Al Baleed Archaeological Park for small and medium-sized enterprises and Riyada card holders to showcase antiques, gifts, and handicrafts.

In a bid to preserve heritage sites, Sadah Fort is set to reopen following restoration efforts, offering visitors insight into the region’s rich history. Similarly, Rakhyut Fort will welcome visitors on World Heritage Day, April 18, celebrating Dhofar’s cultural legacy.

Abri highlighted the governorate’s active pursuit of investment opportunities, with over 20 prospects identified to fuel tourism growth. Plans are underway to expand the hospitality sector, with new 4- and 5-star hotel projects aiming to increase the total number of hotel rooms from 6,000 to 7,000 by year-end.

To amplify Dhofar’s appeal as a premier tourist destination, the ministry is crafting a promotion strategy targeting Gulf and international markets. Signature events like the Frankincense Season, Empty Quarter Festival, and Omani Culinary Arts Festival are poised to attract a diverse audience, celebrating the region’s cultural diversity and natural splendor.

As Dhofar continues to emerge as a top tourist hotspot, travelers can anticipate an array of enriching experiences, from exploring ancient forts to indulging in culinary delights, amidst the breathtaking beauty of Oman’s southern gem.
