Tourism industry in Peru is set to become one of the world’s fastest growing, and will contribute more than USD 23 billion to the economy by 2025, according to new research released at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit 2018. This would account for 7.8% of Peru’s GDP and have a highly positive impact on the economy’s travel and tourism sector. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the sector is expected to grow by an impressive 6.9% year-on-year by the end of 2025, this indicating Peru’s increasing importance as a tourism hub.
Impressive Job Growth in the Tourism industry of Peru
The economic contribution of Peru tourism is not only monetary. The sector will also generate about 1.17 million jobs, making up 6.6% of national employment in 2025. That would be 8.4 percent more jobs than in 2019. The economic contribution of tourism and the number of jobs achieved demonstrate the vital contributions of tourism to economic development and job provision.
Domestic Tourism Shows Strong Growth
One of the significant characteristics of the Peru tourism expansion over the years is the great performance of the domestic tourism market. Domestic travel and tourism spending will rise to over USD 12 billion by the end of this year, 6.5% on the 2012 level, WTTC predicted. This expansion undercuts the domestic market’s robustness, a key factor, in the continued buoyancy of Peru’s tourism economy overall.
Surge in International Tourism Spending
In addition to that, there is the international tourism market in Peru. The WTTC estimates that by end of 2025 international tourism expenditure will have reached over USD 5 billion, an increase of 9.4% over 2024.

The increase in spending is a reflection of the rising appeal of Peru as a leading international destination among travelers who come to the Andean country, with more visitors being drawn by the country’s wealth of cultural heritage, historic sites and natural splendors.

A Look Back at 2024 Performance
As of 2024, the Peruvian tourism industry has contributed USD 21.6 billion to the national economy, 7.5 per cent of the GDP. Back then, the industry provided 1.11 million jobs — 6.4% of total employment in the nation. Spending by international tourists was USD 4.7 billion, an increase of almost 22% on 2023, and spending by domestic tourists was USD 11.4 billion, over 9% higher than the previous year. The good results in the domestic market speak to a robust offer in the country that invites local travellers and the international tourism observes important monthly increases.
Leisure Travel Dominates Spending
The most important driver of tourism spending in Peru is leisure travel, which represents a share of more than 86% of total tourism expenditure. Business travel, meanwhile, represents much a smaller share at 13.8%. In 2024, the top three source markets for Peru’s tourism sector were Chile, the United States and Ecuador with Chile generating 25 percent of international arrivals, US 18 and Ecuador 8 percent. This breakdown shows how marketable Peru is to both regional as well as international travelers.
WTTC’s optimistic stance for the future
WTTC CEO Julia Simpson was positive regarding the future of Peru’s tourism sector, which she stated is resilient with good prospects for the future. Peru is in the process of becoming a major global player in tourism, bringing about major economic and employment opportunities as well, noted Simpson. She also highlighted the necessity to broaden connectivity to and from the international markets and promote the diversity of attractions and activities that the country offers, in order to lure more tourists.

“The tourism industry has proven that it is able to bounce back from setbacks and the evidence of its growing contribution to stimulating the economy and creating jobs is evident today,” Simpson said. “With clearly defined lines of action, such as increase of international connectivity and additional promotion of its destinations and activities, Peru´s tourism sector is getting ready for a better future”.
Vision 2035: A Decade of Growth
Longer into the future, the WTTC forecasts that tourism in Peru is on an upward trend, forecast to have a total GDP impact of USD 34.3 billion by 2035. This would amount to 8.5% of the national GDP. The industry is also expected to produce 1.4 million jobs by 2035, adding more than 278,500 jobs in the next 10 years.

Regional Context: Tourism in Latin America on the Rise
At a regional scale, the same pattern is occurring in Central and South America. In 2024, tourism in the region accounted for USD 358.7 billion of the regional output, or 7.5% of the regional economy. This was a significant growth from 2019, when the number of travel-related jobs in the region was around 17.5m, or 8 per cent of the overall working population.
Future of Tourism in Peru
Peru’s tourism sector is poised for massive expansion, with new records in GDP contribution, job creation and both domestic and foreign investment. The country aims to become one of the world’s top destination of interest with unique elements ranging from culture to nature for the traveler. And as the industry grows, so too will the Peruvian tourism sector; facilitating more business and having a lasting positive effect not just on the nation’s economy, but on future generations in the nation.
