In the first quarter of this year, Uruguay welcomed around 1,219,198 visitors from abroad. This was 11.6 per cent up from the same time 2019, explained by Tabare Viera, the Tourism Minister.
The Minister explained that this figure makes them truly excited. They see a definite revival process.
Because of the travel restrictions related to pandemic, Uruguay witnessed a slump in terms of tourist arrivals from 2019 to 2022, as cited by the Xinhua news agency report.
Compared to the same time 2019, the tourism revenues of the country, in the first quarter of 2023, declined 4.5 per cent, from $776 million to $741 million.
Uruguay welcomed 3.2 million tourists in 2019. This contributed about 8 per cent to the total GDP.
