The expansion of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) into Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture has ignited curiosity among Taiwanese travelers, resulting in a surge in visitors to the region. The anticipation surrounding the opening of TSMC’s first factory in Japan, set to commence mass production later this year, is expected to further bolster tourism.

During the opening ceremony of the world’s largest contract chip maker’s factory, TSMC’s founder Morris Chang expressed confidence in the facility’s ability to enhance chip supply resilience globally.

Following the launch of direct flights between Taipei and Kumamoto by China Airlines and Starlux Airlines, overnight stays in Kumamoto by Taiwanese visitors have seen a significant increase. Japanese government data indicates a rise of approximately 20,000 Taiwanese visitors from September to November, attributing to the introduction of direct flights.

The strong demand for travel between the two destinations has prompted an increase in flight frequency, with an additional weekly round-trip flight added to accommodate travelers.

The allure of Kumamoto, known for its iconic black bear mascot Kumamon, alongside TSMC’s presence, has captured the attention of Taiwanese tourists. Local businesses, including department stores and traditional markets, have experienced heightened activity, with sales of duty-free goods reaching record levels and Taiwanese visitors contributing significantly to the local economy.

Despite language barriers, TSMC employees and their families relocating to Kumamoto have embraced the region’s natural beauty and fresh air, indicating a positive outlook on their stay in Japan.

Efforts to accommodate Taiwanese visitors, such as providing instructions in traditional Chinese characters and enhancing cultural exchanges, reflect the growing collaboration between the two regions.

As tourism continues to flourish, both Taiwanese and local communities in Kumamoto are working towards fostering meaningful connections and providing support for visitors, enhancing the overall travel experience and strengthening bilateral ties.
