Canary Islands and Barbados are set to benefit from a new wave of tourism activity as Marella Cruises opens bookings for its Winter 2027 program from 2 July 2026. The line’s five ships will homeport across six European and Caribbean ports, creating a broad mix of festive sailings, repositioning cruises, and transatlantic voyages.

The program is especially notable because Marella Discovery 2 will become a permanent adults-only ship, adding a stronger leisure focus to winter cruising. That shift is likely to support tourism demand from couples and adult groups seeking quieter cruise experiences across the Canaries, Madeira, Morocco, and the Caribbean.

Adults-Only Ship

Marella Discovery 2 is moving into a new phase with four adults-only onboard concepts that will replace former children’s spaces. The refreshed spaces will include a speakeasy, an escape room, a karaoke room, and an arts-and-crafts area, giving the ship a more mature entertainment profile.

This change is important for tourism because adults-only cruises often attract travelers looking for relaxed holidays, celebration trips, and longer seasonal escapes. By tailoring the product to that audience, Marella is positioning the ship for winter-sun tourism in markets that value atmosphere, entertainment, and comfort over family-style facilities.

Canary Islands Homeport Plan

During Winter 2027, Marella Discovery 2 will sail from Tenerife and Gran Canaria between November 2027 and March 2028, then shift to Malaga from March 2028 to April 2028. That gives the ship a flexible winter base in one of Europe’s most popular sunshine destinations.

For tourism in the Canaries, the plan is significant because homeporting brings spending into local ports, hotels, transfers, and shore-excursion businesses. Regular departures from Tenerife and Gran Canaria can also strengthen cruise-linked tourism flows across nearby islands such as Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Palma.

Atlantic Fusion Itinerary

One of the headline sailings is the new seven-night Atlantic Fusion itinerary, which includes Agadir in Morocco. The route is designed to showcase a mix of island and coastal destinations, including Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto del Rosario, Arrecife, Agadir, Santa Cruz, La Palma, and a day at sea before returning to Gran Canaria.

This itinerary has strong tourism potential because it connects multiple warm-weather destinations in one trip. For travelers, that means more variety, while for ports it means more cruise arrivals and stronger visibility in the winter tourism market. Agadir’s inclusion also adds a North African dimension that can broaden the route’s appeal.

Caribbean And Repositioning Cruises

Marella’s wider fleet plan spreads across Europe and the Caribbean, with Marella Discovery homeporting in La Romana in the Dominican Republic before moving to Palma, Majorca. Marella Voyager and Marella Explorer 2 will operate Caribbean itineraries from Barbados throughout the season, while Marella Explorer will alternate between Tenerife and Las Palmas.

For tourism, this broad port mix supports regional visitor economies in both the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Homeporting usually means more hotel stays, airport transfers, dining, and pre- and post-cruise activity, which can strengthen destination tourism beyond the ship itself.

Festive And Winter Travel

The Winter 2027 schedule also includes festive overnight stays and seasonal itineraries designed for holiday travel. Marella highlighted a Christmas call in Funchal, Madeira, on the A Canarian Christmas itinerary, which adds a strong festive tourism element to the program.

That is a useful angle for winter tourism because Christmas and New Year sailings often attract guests seeking warm-weather celebrations with built-in entertainment and sightseeing. Ports such as Funchal, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria stand to benefit from increased seasonal visibility and visitor spending.

Transatlantic Growth

Marella Discovery will also operate thirteen- and fourteen-night transatlantic cruises, including Voyage to the Tropics from Malaga to the Caribbean via Gibraltar, St John’s, Basseterre, Philipsburg, Road Town, and La Romana. These longer itineraries expand the line’s winter portfolio beyond short sunshine cruises.

For tourism, transatlantic sailings matter because they connect European departure ports with Caribbean destinations in a way that supports both inbound and outbound travel. They also extend the cruise season for ports that rely on winter arrivals and can help local tourism businesses manage more consistent demand across the colder months.

Market Impact

The Winter 2027 launch shows that Marella is investing in adult-only cruising, expanded itineraries, and stronger destination variety. That combination should help the line compete in the winter-sun market while giving destination partners more opportunities to capture cruise spending.
