Budget airline easyJet is strengthening its UK-to-Spain connectivity with the introduction of a direct flight route between Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) and Gran Canaria, one of the most sought-after destinations in the Canary Islands.

Set to operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays throughout the winter season, this new service underscores the airline’s commitment to enhancing travel options between the UK and Spain’s sun-soaked archipelago. The addition further bolsters easyJet’s existing flight network, which already includes key UK cities such as Belfast, Bristol, Glasgow, London (Gatwick and Luton), Manchester, and Edinburgh.

This announcement follows easyJet’s recent expansion efforts, including the launch of new routes from London Southend and Birmingham. By increasing its reach within Spain, the airline is reinforcing its position as a major player in UK-to-Canary Islands air travel.

Holding a 25% market share for UK-to-Canaries flights in winter and 15% during summer, easyJet has positioned the region as a crucial part of its European operations. Between May and September last year, the airline carried approximately 64,747 British travelers to Gran Canaria. That number rose significantly in the winter months, with 71,392 passengers heading to the island in search of warm-weather escapes.

The Canary Islands continue to be one of the most popular winter sun destinations for British travelers. In the previous year alone, nearly one million UK tourists visited Gran Canaria, contributing to the record-breaking 6.3 million visitors across the archipelago. British visitors also played a significant role in the local economy, spending approximately €1.24 billion (£1.02 billion), with an average expenditure per trip reaching €1,415 (£1,168).

In addition to this new route, easyJet is also expanding into other European and international destinations. The airline recently introduced twice-weekly flights from London Gatwick to Brest, a scenic seaside city in Brittany, beginning June 25.

Looking further afield, easyJet is set to launch flights to Enfidha in northeastern Tunisia in spring 2025. This move aims to bring much-needed tourism to the region, with flights departing from both London Stansted and London Southend airports.

Meanwhile, Liverpool John Lennon Airport recorded an impressive 5.1 million passengers in 2024, the highest figure since 2011. This marked a substantial 21% increase from 2023, cementing LJLA’s status as one of the UK’s top 10 busiest airports outside of London.
