The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has received a mediators’ recommendation for the bargaining committees of both sides, aiming to resolve the deadlock in renewing the collective agreement for 2,100 Air Transat flight attendants. The recommendation will be reviewed by members during forthcoming information sessions and a subsequent vote, eliminating the possibility of a strike. CUPE will refrain from commenting until the voting process is complete.

The current collective agreement, covering flight attendants based in Montreal (YUL) and Toronto (YYZ), expired on October 31, 2022, with formal negotiations starting on April 17, 2023.

An initial agreement proposed on December 14 was overwhelmingly rejected by the flight attendants, with 98.1% voting against it despite an 87% turnout.

A second proposal, reached on January 7, also failed to pass, rejected by 81.9% of the voting members on February 1.

The Air Transat Component is a key part of CUPE’s Airline Division, which represents over 18,500 flight attendants across various airlines including Air Transat, Air Canada, and others.

CUPE, the largest union in Canada, has 740,000 members nationwide. It serves professionals across a broad range of sectors including healthcare, emergency services, education, and transportation among others.
