United Airlines is refining its operations at Tulum International Airport (TQO) in Mexico, signaling shifts in the emerging air travel market of the region.

The adjustments include route reductions, new service launches, and strategic seasonal scheduling to align with changing demand patterns.

United Reduces Tulum Connectivity

As travel demand to Tulum softens, United Airlines has announced significant reductions in its operations to the destination.

Key changes include:

• Los Angeles (LAX) Route: Permanently canceled, ending direct service between Tulum and this major U.S. market.
• Chicago (ORD) Route: Suspended from March 30 to October 26, 2025, affecting midwestern travelers.
• Newark (EWR) Route: Suspended from May 20 to October 26, 2025, reducing northeastern connectivity.

Despite these cuts, United will maintain twice-daily flights to Houston (IAH) during the summer, preserving a critical connection to the Gulf region.

New Denver-Tulum Service

In a positive development, United is launching a daily Denver (DEN) to Tulum (TQO) route beginning December 19, 2024, using Boeing 737-900ER aircraft. The schedule includes:

• UA1698: Departs Denver at 09:45, arrives in Tulum at 15:43.
• UA1699: Departs Tulum at 16:50, returns to Denver at 19:10.

This new route reflects United’s strategy to tap into demand from the western United States while bolstering connectivity to Tulum.

Washington-London Day Flights Return

For the Winter 2025/26 season, starting October 25, 2025, United Airlines will reinstate its daytime service between Washington Dulles (IAD) and London Heathrow (LHR).

The route will feature Boeing 757-200 aircraft, replacing the larger 767-300ER, indicating a shift toward operational efficiency and targeted capacity.

Simultaneously, United will resume its Newark (EWR) to Tenerife (TFS) route with three weekly flights using Boeing 757-200 aircraft, underscoring the airline’s agility in adapting to seasonal demand.

Other Airline Adjustments in Tulum

American Airlines is also revising its Tulum operations, discontinuing its Charlotte (CLT) to Tulum (TQO) route effective February 13, 2025.

Despite this, American will maintain year-round service from Miami (MIA) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), ensuring sustained access to Tulum from key U.S. markets.

Shifting Dynamics in Tulum’s Air Travel Market

The adjustments by United and American Airlines reflect the evolving market dynamics at Tulum International Airport.

While the destination saw a surge in interest following the airport’s opening last year, carriers are now recalibrating their strategies to optimize routes and meet demand trends.

Tulum remains a vital destination in the region, and these changes highlight airlines’ efforts to balance connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability in response to market conditions.
