The U.S.-based carrier plans to offer Base, Standard, and Flexible fares for its United First and United Business cabins starting in autumn 2026, thus implementing its tiered pricing policy for domestic first class and certain short-haul international routes. This will allow customers to have different levels of seat selection, baggage policies, and flexibility of tickets, with the most affordable category having additional limitations. It was officially announced by United Airlines on its website that it plans to launch the three-tier fares for United First and United Business cabins starting in autumn 2026. Yet, the exact date of booking these fares is not known. This step comes after the implementation of tiered fares for Polaris business class and Premium Plus cabins by the same airline.

United First Introduces Three Fare Options

United First is offered on domestic US flights, including services to Alaska and Hawaii, as well as flights to US territories. Under the new structure, passengers will be able to choose between Base, Standard and Flexible fares.

The Base option will include one checked bag and one carry-on bag, but passengers will have to pay extra to select their seats. Flight changes and refunds will not be permitted under the conditions outlined for this fare.

Standard will include seat selection, two checked bags and one carry-on bag. Passengers will also be able to change their flights, although the ticket will remain non-refundable.

Flexible will include the benefits offered with Standard, with the additional option of a refund, subject to the applicable fare conditions.

The differences could affect the final cost of a journey. A Base ticket may initially appear cheaper, but passengers who want to choose their seats or need greater flexibility may find that a higher fare better suits their plans.

United Business Adds a Lower-Priced Tier

The new fare structure will also cover United Business on eligible short-haul international routes between the United States and Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Business Base will include one checked bag, one carry-on bag and access to the United Club. Seat selection will incur an additional charge, while flight changes and refunds will not be allowed.

Business Standard will include seat selection, two checked bags and one carry-on bag, alongside the ability to change flights. The ticket will remain non-refundable.

Business Flexible will add refund eligibility to the benefits available with Standard. This option is likely to appeal to passengers who need greater certainty when making travel arrangements, particularly when business meetings or client commitments could change.

The baggage allowance and ticket conditions are important considerations for travellers comparing fares within the same cabin. Passengers should review the terms displayed at booking, including any restrictions that apply to changes or refunds.

United Extends Its Premium Fare Strategy

United announced a similar tiered structure for its Polaris business-class and Premium Plus cabins in April 2026. Those categories apply to selected long-haul international, transcontinental US and Hawaii services.

The latest expansion brings the same broad pricing approach to United First and United Business. Instead of including the same benefits in every fare, the airline will allow customers to select the combination that matches their budget and travel requirements.

The strategy reflects a wider shift in airline pricing, where different fare products can be sold within a single cabin. Passengers retain the same cabin category, but the benefits attached to their ticket depend on the option purchased.

For airlines, this structure creates more ways to price flexibility and additional services separately. For passengers, it makes comparing the full value of each ticket more important than simply choosing the lowest displayed fare.

Business Travellers Face a Key Trade-Off

The limitations on Base fares may become especially important in the context of business travel programs. Itineraries of business travellers are subject to amendments in case of rescheduling the meeting, requests from clients or other reasons. The fact that flights are crucial for business customers, means that their focus on the lowest initial fare will require calculating whether they gain from that or not. Those who are willing to have seat selection or extra baggage allowance will also have to consider all advantages in comparing these three types of fares. The launch date of United’s United First and United Business Fares bookings is still unknown. Travellers are advised to review the specific terms of the United bookings.
