American Airlines Plans Its Largest Admirals Club in Charlotte

American Airlines is planning to construct its largest Admirals Club lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, by constructing premium passenger facilities at one of its major airports. The planned lounge will be over 40,000 square feet in size and will be located on the mezzanine level of the airport’s atrium. The construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in 2026. The planned facility will offer guests views of the concourse below, spa-style shower suites, bars, dining areas, and designated areas where passengers can rest, work, and recharge. No official opening date was provided by the airline in its announcement. According to local news reports, the target date is early 2028, but the airline has not confirmed the date yet. The project is the continuation of American Airlines’ efforts to invest in its lounges at Charlotte’s airport. In August 2025, American Airlines announced its intention to bring the Flagship lounge experience to Charlotte along with expansion of its Admirals Club lounges.
Charlotte Remains Central to American’s Network
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is American Airlines’ second-largest hub. The airline says the airport connects passengers to more than 180 destinations across 27 countries and supports more than 650 peak daily flights. Its position makes Charlotte an important transfer point for travellers connecting across the eastern United States and to international destinations.

The lounge investment is intended to give passengers more room and a broader range of services as they pass through the airport. The new Admirals Club will be centrally located in the atrium, with views over the concourse and dedicated areas for dining, working and resting.
For passengers with longer connections, shower facilities and dining options can make time between flights more comfortable. Work areas and quieter seating can also appeal to corporate travellers who need somewhere to prepare for meetings or manage work before boarding.

American has not yet released the full design specifications, total project cost or final capacity of the lounge. Those details may become clearer as construction progresses.
Existing Admirals Club Lounges to Stay Open
American said its current lounge facilities at Charlotte will remain open during construction. These include the Provisions by Admirals Club lounge near Gate A1 and the Admirals Club lounges in Concourses B and C/D.

Provisions by Admirals Club offers a grab-and-go format, giving travellers a quick option for refreshments rather than a traditional lounge stay. The other Admirals Club locations provide established spaces for eligible passengers to wait, dine or work before departure.
Keeping these facilities open will allow American to maintain its existing lounge offering while work takes place on the new space. The airline has not announced any changes to its operations as part of the construction plan.
Flagship Lounge Adds Another Premium Investment
The new Admirals Club is separate from American’s planned Flagship lounge at Charlotte. Announced in August 2025, the Flagship project will introduce the airline’s higher-end lounge experience to the airport for the first time. American has not confirmed when either new facility will open.
Flagship lounges offer a different experience from standard Admirals Club facilities, with premium dining and services for qualifying passengers on eligible itineraries. Access depends on the passenger’s ticket, route and applicable eligibility rules, rather than simply travelling through Charlotte.
Together, the planned lounges represent a significant addition to American’s premium facilities at CLT. The new Admirals Club will become the largest in the airline’s network once completed, while the Flagship lounge will provide a separate option for eligible premium international travellers.
Airport Lounges Become a Competitive Focus
Investment in airline and credit card lounges has grown, as airlines and others vie for loyalty of frequent flyers and premium passengers. Expanding lounges, better food and beverages, showers, and workspaces are all important components of the airport experience. In the case of American, the importance of lounge capacity is driven by the fact that Charlotte acts as an important connecting hub for the carrier. Passengers may have to spend considerable time at the airport while changing planes for both international and domestic flights. The next immediate step is the construction of the new facility. American Airlines has yet to set a completion date for its Admirals Club or Flagship Lounge projects; therefore, passengers must wait for confirmation before expecting their availability on a particular day of travel.
