The scenic Venice, the much-visited Italian city famous for its spectacular canals and historic attraction, is preparing up for a brave experiment which will be targeted at restricting over-tourism. In an initiation to recover its control over burgeoning numbers of visitors, Venice is anticipating to start a trial phase of a €5 daily fee. It would be applicable for all visitors aged 14 years and above on Tuesday. Also, this decision will need visitors to book in advance in terms of their entry to the city.

Venice is wrestling hard with the penalty costs of its huge popularity among the tourists worldwide. In spite of its small size which is a mere 7.6 square kilometres, the city in 2019, greeted almost 13 million tourists, as National Statistics Institute reported. With number of visitors projected to exceed the levels of pre-pandemic times in the forthcoming years, the issue related to over-tourism has reached dangerous levels at this moment.

A city council member, Simone Venturini, in charge of tourism, confers the crucial need for interference. He also adds that the city of Venice, as Europe’s one of the most visited cities, bears the effect of over tourism. The main objective of the proposed fee is to inspire tourists to opt for off-peak days.
