In an exclusive interview at the ASEAN Tourism Forum, Mr. Nguyen Quy Phuong, Director of the Tourism Marketing Division at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, under the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, shared insightful updates and ambitious strategies to rejuvenate and promote Vietnam’s tourism sector post-COVID-19.

The conversation delved into marketing campaigns, community-based tourism, participation in global trade shows, and efforts to boost MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, offering a comprehensive overview of Vietnam’s roadmap to welcome travelers from around the globe.

Marketing Campaigns to Boost Tourism

In the aftermath of the pandemic, Vietnam is keenly focusing on both traditional and new markets to revitalize its tourism industry. Mr. Phuong highlighted the CH market (China) and the ASEAN region as traditional strongholds. However, a new emphasis is being placed on South Asia, particularly India, identified as a market of great potential due to the increasing number of flights and growing interest in Vietnam’s diverse offerings, including sun, sea, spa, and resorts.

The interview underscored the initiative to cater specifically to Indian travelers, including expanding Indian cuisine options and tailored products to make Vietnam an attractive destination for them. With 65 weekly flights connecting major Indian cities to Vietnam, there’s an ambitious plan to draw more Indian tourists, tapping into the market’s vast potential for outbound travel.

Community-Based Tourism and Empowerment

Vietnam’s approach to sustainable tourism development hinges significantly on community-based tourism. Villages across the country are being groomed to welcome international visitors, providing authentic experiences that benefit both travelers and local communities economically and socially. This model not only generates income for villagers but also fosters a spirit of unity and cultural exchange. The government’s support, through subsidies for communities meeting specific service standards, is pivotal in elevating the quality of tourism experiences offered.

Participation in Global Trade Shows

Mr. Phuong shared Vietnam’s active participation in renowned international trade shows such as ITB Berlin, WTM London, and TRAVEX, highlighting the country’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence on the global tourism stage. Participation in trade shows across different regions, including North America and India, is part of Vietnam’s strategy to diversify its market outreach and attract tourists from various geographies.

Boosting MICE Tourism

The MICE tourism segment is another area where Vietnam is setting its sights, leveraging its robust infrastructure and an array of high-quality accommodations. With over 600 two to five-star properties and an extensive room inventory, Vietnam is poised to become a leading destination for MICE tourism in Southeast Asia. Urban centers like Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc Island are equipped with facilities capable of hosting large-scale events, incentive travel, and business meetings, marking Vietnam as an emerging hotspot for corporate travel.

Vietnam’s Tourism Appeal

Vietnam’s charm as a travel destination lies in its incredible diversity, from bustling urban centers to serene countryside, high mountains, and picturesque beaches. The country is rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, offering travelers a broad spectrum of experiences. From ecotourism and wellness tourism to culinary and adventure tourism, Vietnam caters to a wide array of interests, promising unique and memorable experiences to global tourists.

Vietnam is rapidly emerging as a destination of choice for travelers seeking authenticity, diversity, and sustainability. With its concerted efforts to promote responsible tourism, enhance community-based tourism, and capitalize on its natural and cultural assets, Vietnam is not just reopening its doors to the world; it’s inviting travelers to experience the depth and richness of its heritage and natural beauty. The country’s focus on inclusive growth, environmental preservation, and cultural promotion is setting a benchmark for tourism development in the region and beyond.

Vietnam’s participation in ASEAN Tourism Forum and its strategic initiatives post-COVID-19 reflect a nation eager to share its treasures with the world once again. Through careful planning, community engagement, and targeted marketing, Vietnam is poised to reclaim and surpass its pre-pandemic tourism success, offering a warm welcome to visitors from across the globe.
