Vietnam Takes the Lead in Sustainable Travel with a Strong Commitment to Green Tourism Through the VITA Green Certification Program

Published on August 27, 2025

Vietnam is positioning itself to be a leader in green tourism to align with the global shift towards sustainability in the tourism industry. The country is taking advantage of its natural beauty and cultural heritage to create a tourism model that meets the rising demand for low-carbon and responsible travel, because more and more tourists want eco-friendly visits that respect the environment. Through initiatives such as the VITA Green label, Vietnam is taking steps towards a more sustainable tourism industry.

VITA Green: Vietnam’s Commitment to Eco-Friendly Tourism

VITA Green, Vietnam’s eco-tourism label, was set up in 2019 and is now one of the country’s initiatives in green tourism. This program is aimed to promote the adoption of sustainability in tourism by VITA members, such as reduction of plastic use, water conservation, and energy efficient operations. Currently, around thirty tourism businesses in Vietnam have received the VITA Green certification, and the aim is to increase the number to a hundred by the end of this year.

Nonetheless, the significant challenge for Vietnam is not only VITA Green’s international visibility but its recognition as a trustworthy certification. In the context of the global tourism market, where sustainability is increasingly becoming a key factor in destination choice, gaining trust and recognition from international travelers is vital for the country to remain competitive.

Aligning with Global Sustainability Standards

Vietnam’s green tourism initiative must align with international sustainability standards to gain traction on the global stage. VITA Green is being meticulously crafted to align with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Travelife, and Green Key. By following these international benchmarks, Vietnam’s certification assures that the criteria are credible and reliable as per international benchmarks.

Addressing “greenwashing”—the practice of businesses making false or exaggerated claims about their sustainability efforts— is yet another primary focus of the strategy for Vietnam. For VITA Green to preserve its reputation, it has to make sure its standards are set to benchmark criteria that are measurable, transparent, and rigid. This helps in garnering the much-needed confidence from the visitors who are on the lookout for genuine sustainable travel and tourism options.

Building a Distinct and Compelling Brand Identity

VITA Green has the challenge of distinguishing itself from the 400 eco-labels. This challenge is not easy to achieve as it also poses the opportunity for Vietnam to create a distinct brand identity with the VITA Green label and attract eco-friendly travelers to the country. The label should not just be a certification; it should depict a narrative of cultural regard, environmental safeguarding, and the elevation of local communities.

The Vietnamese tourism sector has already made great progress toward adopting more sustainable tourism strategies. Several tourism companies are blending locally sourced ingredients, preserved traditional dishes, and sponsoring conservation programs. Such initiatives not only help boost the Vietnamese economy but more importantly, bolster the nation’s image as a responsible tourism destination.

The older millennials and Gen Z travelers are much more inclined to spend on responsible travel. This development in consumer behavior is a very attractive prospect for VITA Green to establish sustainable tourism branding in Vietnam. With the rise in sustainably minded travelers, this shift can allow Vietnam to position itself as a leading destination for eco-friendly tourism.

Strategic Roadmap for Global Expansion

Vietnam has set an aggressive strategic plan for VITA Green’s sustainable development. From 2025 to 2026, the primary focus will be on the protection of intellectual property and streamlining the VITA Green data certification processes for uniformity. From 2026 to 2028, the focus will shift to promoting VITA Green in the international tourism forums, conferences, and other global tourism events. By the year 2028, the objective is to strengthen conservation policies of sustainable tourism, stimulate scholarly research on sustainable tourism, and foster international collaborations.

VITA Green does not seek to serve merely as a certification; rather, it aspires to function as a “green passport” for tourism enterprises in Vietnam. With this, enterprises will be able to access global markets, as well as integrate into international tourism supply chains with greater ease. This will promote Vietnam’s sustainable and competitive tourism sector development.

The Future of Sustainable Tourism in Vietnam

Vietnam’s strategic location in Southeast Asia positions the country as a potential leader for green tourism. With the VITA Green label, Vietnam is trying to create a recognized international standard that embodies sustainability, protection of the culture and responsible development. Vietnam is reinforcing sustainable tourism and is looking to shift the focus of positioning the country as a sustainable tourism market by fighting against greenwashing.

Vietnam is recognized for its tourism brand, but the country is equally appreciated for the commitment to sustainability and the responsible management of its tourism resources. Initiatives, such as VITA Green, are aimed at preserving and protecting the environment for the present and future. Eco-friendly tourism is rapidly gaining popularity, and Vietnam is well positioned to capitalize on the international tourism market and the prevailing global demand for sustainability.
