Following a historic year for tourism in 2024, Indianapolis is set for another blockbuster year in 2025 as Visit Indy projects over 1.8 million visitors for a lineup of major events. City leaders highlighted the momentum during Visit Indy’s annual State of Tourism event, held at the Indiana Convention Center, where more than 1,000 industry professionals gathered to celebrate record-breaking tourism achievements.

Indianapolis Sets New Tourism Records

Morgan Snyder, spokesperson for Visit Indy, declared 2024 “the biggest year in Indy’s tourism history”, setting the stage for continued growth. Mayor Joe Hogsett echoed this optimism, noting that $2.5 billion in tourism infrastructure investments are fueling the city’s expansion. Projects include:

• Redevelopment of Pan Am Plaza
• Re-envisioning of Georgia Street
• Revitalization of Circle Centre Mall
• Expansion of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail

These enhancements align with Indiana’s Office of Tourism Development strategies to boost visitor spending, enhance infrastructure, and position Indianapolis as a premier event hub.

Major Events Driving Tourism in 2025

Indianapolis has established itself as a sports tourism powerhouse, and 2025 is set to be another landmark year with a packed schedule of high-profile events, including:

• NFL Scouting Combine (February) – A key event for professional football scouting, attracting thousands of media, athletes, and fans.
• March Madness (March-April) – Indianapolis will host the NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional Championship, along with the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.
• 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 (May) – The world-famous Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of the largest sporting events globally.
• WNBA All-Star Weekend (July) – A major milestone for women’s basketball, expected to draw record crowds.
• Big Ten Football Championship (December) – A staple of Indianapolis sports culture, bringing tens of thousands of fans to Lucas Oil Stadium.
• Indiana Fever Season – Following a banner year in 2024, the Indiana Fever are expected to attract record attendance, with star Caitlin Clark playing a key role in the team’s growing fan base.

During the State of Tourism event, the Indiana Fever received the Bill McGowan Leadership Award, the city’s highest tourism honor. Caitlin Clark, who helped accept the award, praised Indianapolis’ welcoming community and passionate sports culture, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a Midwest tourism leader.

Infrastructure & Economic Growth

Indianapolis’ investments in tourism infrastructure align with Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) goals to drive visitor spending and increase economic impact. The tourism sector contributes significantly to Indiana’s economy, supporting jobs, hospitality businesses, and long-term urban development.

“Our momentum in 2025 is undeniable,” said Mayor Hogsett. “With major investments in our downtown and an incredible lineup of events, Indianapolis is ready to reach new heights in tourism.”
