India’s Railways is developing the B35, an indigenously manufactured bullet train, which can touch speeds of 350 kmph. Along with developing the B35, India is accelerating research on other railway technology and manufacturing advanced railway systems. The above initiatives include the completion of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project.

India is moving towards a new chapter in railway development with plans to introduce indigenous bullet trains capable of reaching a design speed of 350 kmph by 2030. The upcoming B35 high-speed train project represents a major push to develop homegrown railway technology, strengthen manufacturing capabilities and prepare the foundation for a wider high-speed rail network.

The development is progressing alongside the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, India’s first dedicated bullet train project. The revised investment requirement for the corridor has now crossed Rs 2 lakh crore as the country builds the infrastructure needed for advanced high-speed railway operations.

India Builds Domestic High-Speed Train Technology For Future Rail Growth

India has started developing the B35 high-speed train platform as part of its long-term strategy to create advanced bullet trains within the country. The trains are planned with a design speed of 350 kmph, representing a significant technological upgrade from existing railway systems.

The B35 programme aims to establish domestic expertise in high-speed train design, manufacturing and operations. It will help India move towards greater self-reliance in railway technology while supporting future high-speed rail projects across different regions.

The development comes during a period of rapid innovation in global bullet train technology. Japan is also preparing its next-generation E10 Shinkansen trains, which are expected to enter production around 2030.

Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project Sees Major Investment Increase

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor has undergone a substantial cost revision, with the total estimated expenditure now exceeding Rs 2 lakh crore. The updated figure is significantly higher than the original estimate prepared in 2015.

The increase reflects the complexity of constructing a high-speed railway system that requires specialised infrastructure, advanced signalling technology, modern stations and dedicated tracks.

Around Rs 1 lakh crore of the revised investment is expected to be supported through the Union Budget, highlighting the importance of the project in India’s transport development plans.

Several key areas have contributed to the rise in project costs:

  • Land acquisition expenses have increased to approximately Rs 19,700 crore.
  • Infrastructure development costs have grown to more than Rs 1 lakh crore.
  • Spending on train systems, signalling equipment and safety technology has increased considerably.

The revised investment reflects the scale required to develop a world-class high-speed rail corridor.

India Develops Homegrown Train Control System For Safer Operations

India is not only focusing on faster trains but also on advanced railway management technology. The country is developing the Bharat Train Control System (BTCS), an indigenous technology designed to improve train safety and operational efficiency.

The system will help manage train speeds, monitor distances between trains and support safer movement across both high-speed and conventional railway networks.

The introduction of a domestic train control system will strengthen India’s railway technology ecosystem and reduce dependence on foreign signalling solutions. It will also support future expansion of high-speed rail services throughout the country.

B28 Trains To Introduce India’s First Bullet Rail Services

Before the arrival of the faster B35 trains, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor will begin operations with B28 high-speed trainsets.

The B28 trains are designed to achieve speeds of up to 280 kmph, with operational speeds planned at 249 kmph. These trains will form the first generation of India’s bullet train services.

Manufacturing of B28 trainsets is already underway, with prototype units expected to enter testing by the first quarter of 2027. The production programme will support the initial launch of high-speed rail operations on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route.

The estimated cost of the corridor, excluding future next-generation train options, is around Rs 399 crore per kilometre.

India’s High-Speed Rail Vision Moves Towards 2030 Milestone

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is expected to reshape India’s railway landscape by introducing faster travel, advanced technology and modern passenger infrastructure.

The development of B35 trains marks a shift from adopting global high-speed rail technology towards creating India’s own solutions. Along with indigenous train manufacturing and the development of advanced control systems, the project will help build a stronger railway technology ecosystem.

By 2030, it is expected that bullet train connections between major cities will have improved, and plans for other corridors will have been drawn up. In the meantime, advances in various other areas of infrastructure will allow for the growth of the country’s high-speed passenger rail network.
