In August 2026, Indian Railways was able to make even larger connectivity strides with nearly 67.3 crore passengers using the rail network, an increase from 64.43 crore passenger trips one year prior. This growth can be attributed to several factors, outlined below. First, with the addition of different train services, Indian Railways was able to operate festival special trains and Amrit Bharat services, in addition to improving and expanding capacity along the different service lines in response to the growing passenger demand in different areas of India. In addition to the growth in passenger numbers, Indian Railways made gains in strengthening its freight network by constructing new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals and increasing the transport of goods. This growth signals the rail network’s positive impact on both passenger and economic transport.

Indian Railways witnessed a strong increase in passenger movement in August 2026, with 67.27 crore travellers using railway services during the month. The figure was higher than the 64.43 crore passengers recorded in August 2025, showing continued growth in demand for rail connectivity across India.

The rise came as Indian Railways expanded its passenger operations by introducing additional services, increasing train capacity and adding more travel options to meet the needs of passengers across different regions. The growth underlines the continued role of railways as one of India’s most widely used transportation networks.

Suburban Rail Networks Support Growth With Rising Daily Passenger Demand

Suburban train services recorded a major increase in passenger numbers during August 2026. Around 38.01 crore passengers travelled on suburban routes, compared with 34.89 crore during the same month in 2025.

Local train networks remain the backbone of daily transportation in many major cities, helping millions of passengers travel efficiently for work, education and other routine activities.

The increase in suburban passenger movement reflects the growing need for reliable urban rail systems. With large populations depending on affordable public transport, suburban railway services continue to play a crucial role in reducing travel challenges in crowded metropolitan areas.

Additional Festival Trains Help Manage Rakshabandhan Travel Rush

Indian Railways increased special train operations during the Rakshabandhan festival period to accommodate higher passenger demand.

Between August 25 and 31, 2026, railway services operated 144 trips under Rakshabandhan Special trains. This marked a significant increase compared with 48 special train trips operated during the same festival period in 2025.

Festival seasons often create a sharp rise in passenger movement as people travel to their hometowns and family destinations. The additional services helped passengers access more travel options and supported smoother movement during the busy holiday period.

The expansion of festival special trains remains an important part of railway planning to manage seasonal passenger demand.

Amrit Bharat Services Expand Affordable Long-Distance Travel Options

Indian Railways continued its efforts to improve long-distance connectivity by expanding Amrit Bharat train services across important routes.

These services are aimed at providing affordable and improved rail connections between major cities and regional centres. The expansion allows more passengers to access convenient train travel while strengthening links between different parts of the country.

Seven existing special train services were also converted into regular Amrit Bharat operations. These include routes connecting Subedarganj with Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Gorakhpur with Bandra Terminus, Gorakhpur with Delhi Junction, Ahmedabad with Bhagalpur, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus with Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Junction with Udhna Junction and Dhanbad with Coimbatore.

The addition of these services improves connectivity on important passenger corridors and increases travel choices for passengers.

Indian Railways Expands Freight Capacity Through New Cargo Terminals

Alongside passenger growth, Indian Railways continued strengthening its freight transportation infrastructure by expanding the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal network.

Five new cargo terminals were commissioned in August 2026, increasing the total number of operational Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals to 149 by August 31, 2026.

The newly added terminals are located in Shivlakha, Gujarat; Nalli, Tamil Nadu; Shaktinagar, Uttar Pradesh; Deoragram, Madhya Pradesh; and Brajrajnagar, Odisha.

These terminals are designed to improve freight handling efficiency, support industrial transportation and strengthen rail-based logistics across India.

Freight Transportation Records Growth As Rail Network Supports Economy

Indian Railways transported 137.9 million tonnes of freight in August 2026, compared with 130.9 million tonnes in August 2025. The increase represents a year-on-year growth of 5.4%.

The rise in freight movement was supported by strong demand from key industries, including coal, iron ore, steel, fertilisers and other essential commodities.

A stronger freight network helps industries move goods more efficiently while improving supply chain reliability across the country. Rail-based freight transportation also supports economic activity by connecting production centres with markets.

Freight revenue increased by 6.27% during August 2026 compared with the same month in the previous year.

Passenger and freight operations both experiencing growth emphasizes the expanding capacity of the Indian Railways. The infrastructure and service increases along the changing connectivity of the railway network allow for the Indian Railways to better support the transportation demands of India.
