Cassidy Airport is a major part of that programme, with runway repairs, aviation safety improvements and better road connections planned.

An official procurement plan identifies an estimated US$85 million civil-works package covering the runway and taxiway, car park and traffic management, airport security fencing, the airport connection road and roads in London Town. Procurement is currently scheduled to begin in March 2027.

The wider project also includes navigation, security, safety and firefighting equipment, while Cassidy’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting capability is targeted for an upgrade from Category 6 to Category 7.

Fiji and United States Remain Kiritimati’s International Air Gateways

Kiritimati currently has an unusually strategic international position.

Fiji Airways serves the island from Nadi in Fiji and Honolulu in Hawaii, United States. According to the Tourism Authority of Kiribati, Nadi–Kiritimati services operate weekly, while Honolulu–Kiritimati flights cross the International Date Line.

Nadi also acts as an important connecting gateway. Official tourism information lists Fiji Airways connections into Nadi from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, including Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland and Wellington among other cities. These are connecting opportunities rather than direct Kiritimati routes.

Nauru Airlines and Air Kiribati Strengthen Island Connectivity

Nauru Airlines operates the Tarawa–Kiritimati service on behalf of Air Kiribati. Its current published schedules extend through 2 April 2027, although passengers are advised that schedules can change.

Kiritimati also functions as a gateway to some of Kiribati’s even more remote Line Islands. Air Kiribati currently schedules Twin Otter services from Kiritimati to Washington Island, onward to Fanning Island, before returning to Kiritimati on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Holland America Line’s official 2026–2027 South Pacific programme includes the 34-day Legendary South Pacific Crossing aboard Noordam from Seattle, United States, to Sydney, Australia, departing on 11 October 2026.

The itinerary map includes Christmas Island, the alternative name for Kiritimati. Holland America notes that ports remain subject to change based on government approval, so the call should be described as scheduled rather than guaranteed.

The broader cruise programme also links destinations across Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and other South Pacific islands, placing Kiritimati within a much larger regional tourism corridor.

Roads and Seaports Could Support the Next Tourism Phase

Kiribati’s Ministry of Finance identifies rehabilitation of Kiritimati’s airport, seaports and main island road as central to the island’s development. The government says these investments are intended to support eco-tourism, domestic and international aviation, fisheries, trade and logistics.

Current development priorities therefore focus on aviation, roads and maritime infrastructure rather than passenger rail.

Fishing, Diving and Nature Give Kiritimati a Powerful Tourism Product

Better connectivity matters because Kiritimati already has a highly distinctive tourism offer.

The Tourism Authority describes it as the world’s largest coral atoll and a world-class saltwater fly-fishing destination. Bonefish, giant trevally and triggerfish attract anglers, while offshore waters support tuna, marlin, sailfish, wahoo and barracuda.

Travellers can also pursue diving, surfing and birdwatching. Kiritimati supports 18 bird species, including the endemic Christmas Island reed-warbler.
