Wizz Air, recognized as Europe’s most rapidly expanding and ecologically forward airline, has been awarded a “B” rating in the 2023 environmental evaluation by CDP, a leading global organization for environmental reporting. This rating marks a significant improvement over its “D” rating in 2022, demonstrating Wizz Air’s enhanced efforts in tackling climate change.

This “B” rating from CDP reflects Wizz Air’s concerted efforts towards addressing climate-related concerns. Notably, CDP has given Wizz Air top scores of “A/A-” for its transparency in reporting emissions for Scope 1 & 2, its initiatives for reducing emissions and introducing low-carbon products, as well as its risk management and governance practices.

Wizz Air is renowned for maintaining the lowest carbon emissions per passenger kilometer compared to its rivals and aims to reduce its CO2 emissions intensity by 25% by the year 2030. In 2023, the airline reported its lowest annual average CO2 emission intensity at 51.5 grams per passenger kilometer, achieving a 6.8% reduction from the previous year. Key to its environmental strategy are the renewal of its aircraft fleet, enhancing operational efficiency, and investing in sustainable aviation fuels. Wizz Air is also committed to collaborating with partners and stakeholders across the industry to cut down CO2 emissions across its supply chain.

Since 2021, Wizz Air has been participating in the CDP disclosure, aligning its efforts with the recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. The CDP, which maintains the world’s most extensive environmental database, uses its scoring system to influence investment and procurement choices, guiding them towards a sustainable, resilient, and zero-carbon economy.

Yvonne Moynihan Corporate and ESG Officer at Wizz Air, said: “The “B” score in CDP’s ranking is a testament to the significant work that Wizz Air is doing to manage its environmental impact. Wizz Air already operates with the lowest carbon footprint per passenger/km in the world[4], and we are proud that we were also able to significantly improve our CDP ranking this year, especially considering that CDP has strengthened their criteria for scoring. We have a robust sustainability strategy, continue investing in the latest technology aircraft and sustainable aviation fuel and remain committed to our target to further reduce our carbon intensity by 25% by 2030.”
