Australia’s air connectivity will be strengthened this December as a second service is added by Etihad Airways between Abu Dhabi and Sydney. The expansion of Etihad Sydney flights will begin on 15 December 2026, in time for the summer holiday period. Four additional weekly services will be added to the existing ten, creating two departures every day.

More than 5,000 weekly seats will be offered on the route, with all services operated by Airbus A350 aircraft. The expanded schedule matters because greater flexibility, stronger onward connections and more stopover options will be provided for travellers using the Abu Dhabi hub.

Double daily schedule adds capacity between Abu Dhabi and Sydney

The new schedule will see four weekly services added to Etihad’s existing ten flights, taking the route to 14 weekly frequencies. As a result, Etihad double daily flights will be available on every day of the week from 15 December 2026. The increase will provide passengers with a wider choice of departure times while more than 5,000 seats a week will be supplied between the two cities.

All Abu Dhabi to Sydney flights will be operated by the Airbus A350. In Business Class, private spaces will be provided behind sliding doors, while 79-inch lie-flat beds, wireless charging and 18.5-inch screens will be available. Economy passengers will be offered 17.4-inch-wide seats, 13.3-inch 4K touchscreens and Bluetooth audio. High-speed Wi-Fi will also be available throughout the aircraft, extending the onboard connectivity offered across the route.

The timing has been set for the Australian summer holiday period, when the expanded timetable will already be in place. Two departures will be available each day rather than a schedule that varies by weekday. For passengers planning around connections, the consistent frequency will make the timetable easier to use across the week.

Abu Dhabi stopovers become easier for Australian travellers

Greater access to Abu Dhabi will be created for Australians using the expanded schedule. Etihad Sydney flights will allow travellers to consider a stop in the UAE capital alongside their longer journey. Attractions highlighted by the airline include Louvre Abu Dhabi, the new Zayed National Museum, Saadiyat Island, Qasr Al Hosn and Yas Marina, where Formula 1 activity is staged in December.

A one- or two-night complimentary hotel stay can also be added through the Abu Dhabi Stopover programme for eligible connecting guests. Al Ain has now been included within the programme, broadening the range of places that can be visited during a stopover. The oasis city is associated with UNESCO-listed gardens, historic forts and Jebel Hafeet mountain. Through these options, Etihad Australia flights will offer travellers additional ways to break up a long-distance journey while experiencing destinations within the emirate.

Sydney gains stronger connections across Etihad’s global network

Sydney flight connectivity will also be expanded through the timing of the two daily departures. For passengers in New South Wales, the services have been aligned with Etihad’s morning and evening banks at Abu Dhabi. Same-day connections can therefore be made to destinations across the Gulf, the wider Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Europe.

The Abu Dhabi to Sydney flights will support onward travel from European cities including Zurich, Geneva, Milan, Rome, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Manchester and Dublin. The additional frequency is intended to provide greater flexibility across Etihad’s network rather than simply add capacity on one city pair. With Etihad double daily flights operating throughout the week, different connection windows will be available for travellers moving between Australia and multiple international markets through Abu Dhabi.

Connections beyond Sydney extend across Australia and New Zealand

Passengers arriving in Sydney from other parts of Etihad’s network will also be provided with onward options beyond the city. Connections across Australia and New Zealand can be made through Etihad’s interline partners Qantas, Jetstar and Air New Zealand. This arrangement broadens Sydney flight connectivity for travellers whose final destination lies outside New South Wales.

The expansion will form part of Etihad Australia flights alongside the airline’s existing daily Abu Dhabi-Melbourne service, which is operated with Boeing 787 aircraft. Sydney, meanwhile, will receive the added capacity exclusively on the Airbus A350 under the announced schedule.

Etihad has served Sydney since 2007, giving the new frequency an established route base. Tickets for the additional services have already been made available through the airline. The December launch will therefore increase both seat supply and timetable choice during the Australian summer holiday period.

Conclusion

A twice-daily schedule will be introduced for Etihad Sydney flights from 15 December 2026, with four weekly services added and the Abu Dhabi-Sydney route increased to 14 flights each week. More than 5,000 seats will be offered weekly, with every service operated by the Airbus A350.

Departure choices will be provided, same-day connections through Abu Dhabi will be supported and access to stopover experiences across the emirate will be expanded. Onward options through Qantas, Jetstar and Air New Zealand will remain available from Sydney. Together with daily Melbourne services, Etihad’s Australian network will be strengthened during the summer travel period.
