Chiang Mai International Airport is built to accommodate Thailand’s rapidly expanding tourism, built upon international travel. It served 6.53 million passengers within the first eight months of 2026 over 43,544 flights. International travel volumes improved by 14% year-on-year due to increased travel demand from key international markets, resumption of travel services, and more direct connect services.

The latest passenger figures highlight Chiang Mai’s growing importance as a major tourism gateway connecting northern Thailand with key overseas markets. Although overall passenger and flight numbers remained close to last year’s level due to global aviation cost pressures and changing airline schedules, international connectivity continued to strengthen.

International Passenger Growth Boosts Chiang Mai’s Position As A Global Tourism Gateway

Chiang Mai International Airport processed 43,544 flights during the first eight months of 2026, including 13,232 international flights, which accounted for more than 30% of total flight movements. International passengers represented almost 30% of the airport’s total passenger traffic, showing the increasing role of overseas visitors in Chiang Mai’s tourism economy.

Travellers from China and South Korea remained the largest international passenger groups, together contributing more than half of all international visitors using the airport. The strong performance from these markets reflects renewed demand for Thailand travel, particularly among visitors seeking cultural experiences, nature tourism, wellness retreats and heritage destinations in northern Thailand.

Chiang Mai has continued rebuilding its international tourism network after the disruption caused by the global pandemic. The airport has seen passenger numbers generally increase year after year as airlines restore services and travellers return to international destinations.

Global Aviation Challenges Slow Growth But Winter Season Brings New Opportunities

Despite strong international demand, aviation challenges affected overall passenger growth during the first eight months of 2026. Rising fuel prices and increased airline operating costs influenced flight planning, while international conditions in some regions created additional pressure on airline schedules.

As a result, total passenger and flight numbers remained similar to the same period in 2025. However, the airport expects stronger growth during the upcoming peak tourism period and winter flight schedule, which begins in late October.

Passenger traffic for the full year is projected to reach approximately 9.97 million travellers, supported by additional flights, restored routes and increased airline capacity.

The winter schedule is expected to improve Chiang Mai’s international connections, with several airlines preparing to resume services or increase flight frequencies to important tourism markets.

New International Routes And Restored Services To Expand Chiang Mai Connectivity

Chiang Mai International Airport is preparing for a stronger winter travel season with additional international services connecting the city with major overseas destinations.

Several airlines are expected to restart or expand routes, including services linking Chiang Mai with destinations in China and South Korea. Increased connectivity to cities such as Jinghong in China’s Xishuangbanna region, Shanghai and Incheon will provide more travel options for international visitors.

A major returning service is the Abu Dhabi–Chiang Mai route, which is scheduled to resume after being temporarily suspended during the summer schedule. The restoration of long-distance connectivity will strengthen Chiang Mai’s access to international travellers through major global aviation hubs.

These route developments are expected to support tourism businesses, hotels, attractions and local communities by creating easier access for overseas visitors.

Airport Infrastructure Upgrades Prepare Chiang Mai For Future Passenger Growth

To handle increasing travel demand, Chiang Mai International Airport has continued upgrading its facilities, passenger management systems and aviation infrastructure.

The airport has completed the installation of six new aircraft boarding bridges, improving passenger movement and aircraft handling efficiency. All replacement boarding bridges entered operation on August 21, increasing the airport’s ability to manage growing flight volumes.

Additional infrastructure projects are also progressing, including the development of a new fire station, cargo building, Control Post 2 and a dedicated ground support equipment parking area.

These improvements are designed to strengthen airport operations while supporting future increases in passenger numbers and aircraft movements.

The airport is also focusing on improving terminal management, security procedures, passenger flows and aviation safety standards to ensure smoother operations during busy travel periods.

As the main aviation gateway to northern Thailand, Chiang Mai International Airport plays a crucial role in connecting the region with domestic and international markets.
