Malaysia Domestic Travel Boom Lifts Spending as Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang Lead the Charge because more Malaysians are travelling, taking more trips and spending more across the country. Official data show domestic visitors reached 290.1 million in 2025, while spending climbed to RM121.3 billion. Selangor led total visitor numbers, Kuala Lumpur posted sharp tourist growth, and Pahang led the tourist count. Malaysia Domestic Travel Boom Lifts Spending as Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang Lead the Charge as stronger visitor demand supports hotels, food, shopping, transport and local tourism businesses nationwide. Momentum continued strongly into the first quarter of 2026.

Malaysia Domestic Tourism Reached New Heights in 2025

Malaysia recorded 290.1 million domestic visitors in 2025, an increase of 11.5% from 260.1 million in 2024. Those travellers made 332.2 million trips, while total domestic tourism expenditure climbed 13.6% to RM121.3 billion.

Spending therefore increased faster than visitor numbers. This indicates that the domestic tourism market was not only attracting more travellers but also generating higher overall expenditure.

Shopping accounted for 36.9% of domestic tourism spending. Food and beverages contributed 16.1%, automotive fuel 13.5% and accommodation 10.7%.

Malaysia’s tourism economy shows strong momentum across both visitor volume and spending. Domestic visitors reached 290.1 million in 2025, while total trips climbed to 332.2 million and expenditure rose to RM121.3 billion. Growth continued into early 2026, with 74.7 million domestic visitors in the first quarter and spending up 15.8% year on year to RM34.0 billion. Selangor remained the most visited state, followed closely by Kuala Lumpur, while Pahang led the tourist count. Tourism also remains a major economic pillar, with industries valued at RM291.9 billion in 2024 and supporting 3.54 million jobs across Malaysia.

Selangor Leads Domestic Visitor Numbers While Kuala Lumpur Gains Ground

Selangor remained Malaysia’s most visited state in 2025 with 36.4 million domestic visitors. Kuala Lumpur followed with 35.1 million, while Perak recorded 23.6 million.

The ranking changes when only tourists, rather than all domestic visitors, are counted.

Pahang led with 11.0 million tourists, followed by Selangor with 10.6 million, Perak with 10.4 million, Kuala Lumpur with 10.1 million and Johor with 9.8 million. Penang recorded 5.6 million tourists.

This distinction matters. DOSM defines domestic visitor activity more broadly than overnight tourism alone, so a state can lead total visitor numbers without leading the tourist category.

Kuala Lumpur Records a Sharp Rise in Tourist Arrivals

Kuala Lumpur produced one of the strongest state-level movements in 2025.

Domestic tourist arrivals to the federal capital increased 62.1% to 10.1 million, compared with 6.2 million in 2024.

That rise strengthens Kuala Lumpur’s role in domestic city tourism and provides a strong comparison point against Selangor, Pahang, Perak and Johor.

The detailed Domestic Tourism by State 2025 release due on 15 September should add greater clarity on receipts, trip purposes, accommodation patterns and other state comparisons.

Q1 2026 Shows Domestic Spending Accelerating Faster Than Travel

The latest quarterly data show that growth continued into 2026.

Malaysia recorded 74.7 million domestic visitors during the first quarter, up 7.2% year on year. Domestic expenditure reached RM34.0 billion, rising a much faster 15.8%.

Domestic tourists reached 27.4 million, up 8.8%. Visiting relatives and friends remained the largest trip purpose at 28.3%, narrowly ahead of shopping at 27.8%, while holidays, leisure and relaxation accounted for 13.6%.

The spending trend is particularly important for the travel economy because it suggests that visitor value is increasing faster than visitor volume.

Tourism Already Accounts for a Major Share of Malaysia’s Economy

The latest completed Tourism Satellite Account shows tourism industries generated RM291.9 billion in 2024, equivalent to 15.1% of Malaysia’s GDP. Tourism Direct GDP reached RM120.3 billion.

Tourism industries employed 3.54 million people, representing 21.6% of total Malaysian employment. Retail trade and food-and-beverage services accounted for the largest employment shares.

Those figures will soon have a new benchmark. DOSM’s scheduled Tourism Satellite Account 2025 release on 15 September will show whether tourism’s economic contribution, employment and expenditure reached another milestone.

Malaysia’s Next Tourism Data Releases Could Reshape the Ranking

The immediate story is already strong: domestic travel reached 290.1 million visitors in 2025, spending reached RM121.3 billion, Selangor led overall visitor volume and Pahang led the tourist count.

But the next official releases will provide the deeper picture. The 15 September publications should reveal updated state-level spending and tourism-economic indicators, while the forthcoming Q2 2026 domestic tourism release will show whether the strong first-quarter spending momentum continued.

Malaysia Domestic Travel Boom Lifts Spending as Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang Lead the Charge because domestic tourism is growing in both volume and value. More visitors are taking more trips, while spending is rising even faster. Selangor leads overall domestic visitor numbers, Kuala Lumpur is gaining strongly, and Pahang leads the tourist count. Malaysia Domestic Travel Boom Lifts Spending as Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang Lead the Charge because stronger demand is feeding shopping, food, accommodation, transport and local businesses. The trend shows domestic tourism is becoming an increasingly powerful part of Malaysia’s wider visitor economy during 2026 overall.
