Frankfurt to Rome Flight Marks Lufthansa’s First Starlink Service

The first aircraft fitted with the new technology is an Airbus A320neo registered D-AINM. It operated flight LH234 from Frankfurt to Rome, departing at 12:15 p.m.

At around 10,000 metres, Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter activated the system. The aircraft has now entered normal scheduled service with the Starlink connection available onboard.

Lufthansa says the technology can provide internet speeds that, in some cases, are faster than connections passengers may use at home or in the office.

Free Wi-Fi Expands the Passenger Travel Experience

The new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service is available free of charge to Miles & More members and Travel ID users, regardless of their travel class.

Passengers can use the service to browse the internet and access destination information, Lufthansa Group content and eJournals. Additional flight-related information and services are also planned for the portal in the future.

The airline says the aim is to create a more consistent digital experience throughout the journey and give passengers greater freedom to remain connected while travelling.

More Lufthansa Aircraft Will Receive Starlink in 2026

The first A320neo is only the beginning of the programme.

Lufthansa plans to equip up to ten more A320-family aircraft operated by Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines with the new high-speed internet system before the end of 2026.

Most installations are expected to take place at Lufthansa Technik in Berlin. The work will be combined with planned technical maintenance periods to reduce unnecessary aircraft downtime.

Other Lufthansa Group airlines are also expected to receive the technology as the programme expands.

Around 850 Aircraft Targeted by 2029

The long-term plan is much larger. Lufthansa Group expects around 850 aircraft across all its airlines to be equipped with Starlink by 2029.

According to the Group, this would make it the largest airline group in Europe to offer this form of high-speed onboard internet access across such a large fleet.

The rollout forms part of Lufthansa Group’s wider investment in aircraft, passenger services and digital technology. For travellers, the shift could make reliable internet a more normal part of flying across Europe and on longer international journeys.
