America’s growing demand for slower, nature-led travel is putting quiet lakes, forests and mountain trails in the spotlight, with Oregon’s Lost Lake Loop emerging as the country’s most peaceful outdoor destination.
Travellers looking to escape crowded cities and busy tourist attractions have a new list of destinations to consider this autumn. A recent analysis of thousands of reviews has identified the US nature spots most frequently associated with being “peaceful”, “quiet”, “relaxing” or offering a chance to “relax”.

The research, conducted by hearing aid manufacturer ReSound, places Lost Lake Loop in Oregon’s Mount Hood National Forest at the top, ahead of Jordan Pond in Maine’s Acadia National Park and Emerald Lake in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.
From the perspective of tourism, the findings highlight a broader opportunity for destinations promoting slow travel, wellness, outdoor recreation and shoulder-season escapes.

Lost Lake Loop recorded 307 relaxation-related mentions, giving it the highest position in the ranking.
Located in Mount Hood National Forest, the destination combines a lake, dense evergreen forest and views of Mount Hood. The 3.1-mile Lakeshore Trail provides an accessible route around Lost Lake, passing through cedar, Douglas fir and hemlock woodland.
For visitors, the attraction is not simply the hiking. The combination of water, forest and mountain scenery creates the type of low-intensity outdoor experience increasingly sought by travellers who want to disconnect from crowded tourism hubs.
The destination could therefore appeal strongly to autumn visitors exploring Oregon and the wider Pacific Northwest.
Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park ranks second with 230 mentions.
The glacial lake is surrounded by woodland and mountain scenery, including the distinctive Bubbles. Visitors can walk along the Jordan Pond Path or simply spend time beside the water.
However, the ranking does not mean Jordan Pond is consistently quiet.
Acadia remains one of the most visited national parks in the US. From a travel-planning perspective, visitors seeking a more peaceful experience should consider early-morning visits and shoulder-season travel rather than relying solely on the destination’s reputation for tranquillity.
Colorado has two destinations in the top five, reinforcing the state’s appeal for travellers seeking mountain-based outdoor experiences.
Emerald Lake ranks third with 200 mentions.
The journey passes Nymph Lake and Dream Lake before reaching the alpine lake, offering visitors a progressively more dramatic mountain landscape.
Bear Lake, also in Rocky Mountain National Park, ranks fifth with 134 mentions.
Its shorter trail around the subalpine lake provides a relatively accessible way to experience Rocky Mountain scenery.
Together, the two destinations demonstrate how Colorado can cater to different types of outdoor travellers, from visitors looking for a short scenic walk to those interested in a longer alpine hike.
The Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park takes fourth place with 149 mentions.
Its appeal is dramatically different from the alpine destinations in Colorado. Moss-covered trees, dense vegetation and a temperate rainforest environment create a slower and more immersive nature experience.
For international visitors touring the Pacific Northwest, the Hoh Rain Forest could form part of a broader Washington itinerary combining national parks, coastal landscapes and outdoor adventure.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore ranks sixth with 118 mentions.
The Michigan destination combines enormous sand dunes, woodland and broad views across Lake Michigan.
Its appearance in the ranking highlights the geographic diversity of peaceful travel experiences in the United States. Travellers do not necessarily need to visit the Rocky Mountains or Pacific Northwest to find dramatic outdoor scenery.
Congaree National Park in South Carolina records 109 mentions, placing seventh.
The park protects old-growth bottomland hardwood forest and offers visitors opportunities to explore via trails, boardwalks and waterways.
Canoeing and kayaking can provide another way to experience the landscape, making Congaree particularly relevant to travellers interested in combining nature, soft adventure and slower-paced exploration.
California’s Tuolumne Meadows Trails in Yosemite National Park rank eighth with 104 mentions.
The high-elevation environment gives visitors an alternative to Yosemite’s more heavily visited areas, although travellers should always check seasonal access and current conditions.
Minnesota’s Gooseberry Falls State Park ranks ninth with 97 mentions, adding waterfalls to the list.
The Trail of the Cedars in Glacier National Park, Montana, completes the top 10 with 88 mentions, combining forest scenery with the dramatic landscapes associated with the northern Rockies.
The ranking offers a useful snapshot of a travel trend that destinations across the United States are increasingly targeting: the search for quieter, more restorative experiences.
Travellers are increasingly combining traditional sightseeing with hiking, wellness, wildlife, scenic drives and time in nature. That creates opportunities for destinations beyond major gateway cities and iconic tourist centres.
Importantly, the ReSound research measures the language used by Tripadvisor reviewers rather than physical noise levels. A high number of references to “peaceful” or “relaxing” does not guarantee an uncrowded visit.
For travellers, timing remains crucial. Early mornings, weekdays and shoulder-season periods can often provide a calmer experience at popular outdoor attractions, subject to local operating conditions.
From Oregon’s forests and Maine’s lakes to Colorado’s alpine scenery and South Carolina’s wetlands, the ranking demonstrates the depth of America’s nature tourism offering.
