Asia-Pacific lags behind in tourism post pandemic

The travel industry is trying to recuperate after the pandemic. However, as per statistics, while tourism is improving in Europe and America, the Asia-Pacific region is still under pressure.

As per the UNWTO forecasts, this year, overseas visitors to Asia and Pacific countries would stay at just 30% of pre-pandemic levels.

However, the Tourism Association in New Zealand said it is not expected to be the case over there. Europe is on the top of recovery with regard to international tourism with people visiting in huge numbers after being locked at home for more than two years. Europe is also a top destination for kiwi travelers. During the first five months of this year, overseas visitors to Europe dropped 36% compared to the pre-pandemic levels. In the Asia and the Pacific, tourist numbers are 90% beneath the pre-pandemic standards.

China being shut is also a major factor for the Asia-Pacific’s bad performance, since it is a huge supply of visitors to the region, particularly New Zealand.

Ann-Marie Johnson from Tourism Industry Aotearoa said that it is surely being noticed; however, it is winter time in the country and they have been expecting to witness visitors in huge numbers till the summer. As per the UNWTO, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to fall behind others for the remaining part of this year.

Nevertheless, for New Zealand, the viewpoint appears more positive.
