Greece’s tourism sector continued its upward trajectory in 2025, with the United Kingdom and Germany remaining the country’s largest international visitor markets, while the United States maintained its position as the leading long-haul source market. According to newly released data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), international arrivals at hotels, campsites and collective tourist accommodation facilities increased during the year, although growth moderated compared with the stronger recovery period following the pandemic.

The latest figures show that Greece welcomed 28.18 million foreign arrivals in 2025, rising from 27.38 million in 2024 and 26.28 million in 2023. The country’s five largest tourism markets — the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, France and Italy — accounted for nearly 49 percent of all international accommodation arrivals, highlighting the continued importance of established European and North American markets.

International Tourism Growth Continues Despite Slower Expansion

Greece’s tourism industry recorded another year of growth in 2025, although the pace of expansion became more moderate.

Foreign arrivals increased by 2.9 percent in 2025, compared with a stronger annual growth rate of 4.2 percent in 2024. Across the two-year period from 2023 to 2025, Greece added nearly 1.9 million international arrivals, representing overall growth of approximately 7.2 percent.

The accommodation sector also recorded higher demand through overnight stays. International visitors generated 131.05 million overnight stays in 2025, compared with 128.18 million in 2024 and 123.11 million in 2023.

However, overnight stay growth slowed from 4.1 percent in 2024 to 2.2 percent in 2025, indicating that the exceptional rebound following global travel restrictions is gradually moving into a more stable phase.

The ELSTAT figures focus on registered stays at hotels, campsites and other collective tourist accommodation facilities. They do not represent total border crossings or unique travellers, as one visitor staying at multiple properties during the same journey may be counted more than once.

Europe Remains the Core Engine of Greek Tourism Demand

European travellers continued to represent the foundation of Greece’s international tourism performance in 2025.

Visitors from European countries generated approximately 22.72 million arrivals, accounting for 80.6 percent of all foreign accommodation arrivals. The share increased slightly compared with 80.4 percent in 2024 and 79.5 percent in 2023, reinforcing Europe’s dominant role in Greece’s tourism market.

European Union countries contributed nearly 14.93 million arrivals, while non-EU European markets generated around 7.78 million arrivals.

Growth from European markets outside the European Union was supported by increased visitor numbers from the United Kingdom, Serbia and Turkey. These markets strengthened Greece’s position as a highly accessible destination for short-haul and regional travel.

The ten largest international source markets collectively produced around 18.32 million arrivals, representing approximately 65 percent of all foreign guests recorded in Greek accommodation establishments.

United Kingdom Expands Lead as Greece’s Largest Source Market

The United Kingdom strengthened its position as Greece’s largest international tourism market in 2025, continuing its strong growth trend.

British arrivals increased from 4.06 million in 2023 to 4.37 million in 2024, before reaching 4.62 million in 2025. Over the three-year period, arrivals from the UK increased by 13.8 percent.

UK travellers represented approximately 16.4 percent of all international accommodation arrivals in Greece, making Britain one of the most influential markets for Greek tourism.

The strong performance of the UK market reflects sustained demand for Greece’s islands, coastal destinations, cultural attractions and seasonal holiday experiences.

Germany remained the second-largest tourism market for Greece, providing a stable source of international visitors.

German arrivals increased from 3.46 million in 2023 to 3.59 million in 2025, representing overall growth of 3.7 percent during the period.

Although Germany recorded slower expansion compared with the UK, it continued to play a crucial role in supporting Greece’s tourism economy through consistent visitor demand.

United States Maintains Strategic Position in Greek Tourism Landscape

The United States remained Greece’s most important long-haul tourism market in 2025 and ranked as the country’s third-largest international source market.

American arrivals reached approximately 2.4 million visitors in both 2024 and 2025. Following modest growth in 2024, arrivals declined by 1.6 percent in 2025, resulting in overall growth of only 0.4 percent compared with 2023.

Despite limited growth, the US market continued to account for around 8.5 percent of Greece’s international accommodation arrivals.

The importance of American travellers extends beyond visitor volume, as the market remains strategically significant due to demand for premium tourism experiences, longer stays and high-value travel segments.

France maintained its position as Greece’s fourth-largest international tourism market. However, arrivals remained below 2023 levels despite a slight recovery in 2025.

French visitor numbers declined in 2024 before recovering partially in 2025, remaining approximately 4 percent lower than the 2023 level.

Italy ranked fifth among Greece’s largest tourism markets. Although Italian arrivals decreased slightly in 2025 following strong growth the previous year, the market achieved an overall increase of 5.5 percent between 2023 and 2025.

Emerging Markets Strengthen Greece’s Tourism Network

Beyond the largest source markets, several European countries recorded notable growth and contributed to Greece’s expanding tourism base.

Poland emerged as one of the strongest-performing European markets. Polish arrivals exceeded 1.1 million in 2025, representing growth of 9.8 percent compared with 2023.

The Netherlands also surpassed the one-million-arrival mark, reinforcing its position as an important northern European market.

Romania recorded one of the most significant increases among Greece’s source markets. Arrivals from Romania climbed from 426,063 in 2023 to 705,037 in 2025, marking a growth rate of 65.5 percent over two years.

The growth of Romanian visitors highlights the increasing importance of regional tourism flows, particularly for destinations in northern Greece.

Sweden completed the top ten source markets with 688,179 arrivals, while Turkey narrowly missed the ranking despite recording strong growth.

Turkish arrivals increased by more than 51 percent between 2023 and 2025, demonstrating rising demand from neighbouring markets.

Smaller markets also showed positive momentum, with Serbia recording strong growth and Asian markets such as China and Japan continuing their recovery.

Greece Enters a New Era of Sustainable Tourism Growth

The latest ELSTAT data confirms that Greece remains one of Europe’s most competitive tourism destinations, supported by strong demand from Europe and continued interest from global markets.

While visitor numbers continue to rise, the slower growth rate suggests that Greece’s tourism sector is moving from a rapid recovery period into a more mature expansion phase.

The future performance of Greek tourism will increasingly depend on maintaining international connectivity, attracting diverse visitor segments and strengthening year-round tourism demand.

With the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States continuing to drive international arrivals, Greece enters the next stage of tourism development with a strong global position and a resilient foundation for continued growth.
