Belize District Sits at the Heart of Belize’s International Tourism Gateway

Philip Goldson International Airport, or BZE, is the most important international tourist entry point in Belize’s official statistics. The airport received 426,436 tourist arrivals in 2024, rising from 356,154 in 2023 and 300,280 in 2022.

Belize recorded 547,370 tourist arrivals nationwide in 2024. This means BZE accounted for roughly 78% of the national total, based on official SIB figures.

San Pedro Seaport also recorded 10,511 tourist arrivals in 2024, compared with 8,501 in 2023 and 3,919 in 2022. The numbers underline the importance of both aviation and marine access to tourism connected with Belize District and its island destinations.

The figures should be read carefully. Airport arrivals are port-of-entry statistics, not a count of travellers who stayed only in Belize District. Many visitors arriving at BZE continue to other parts of the country.

Leisure Travel Dominates Belize’s Visitor Market

Official SIB data provides another useful signal about the type of visitors entering Belize.

Of the country’s 547,370 tourist arrivals in 2024, 533,115 travelled for leisure. Another 12,923 were classified as business visitors and 1,332 as official travellers.

That puts leisure travel at more than 97% of the recorded tourist-arrival total. This is important for Belize District because BZE acts as the principal international gateway for visitors heading towards island, reef, cultural and inland holiday destinations.

San Pedro and Caye Caulker Carry Major Accommodation Capacity

Belize District’s wider tourism strength is also visible in official accommodation statistics.

The SIB records hotel statistics by tourism area, which means Belize, San Pedro and Caye Caulker are listed separately. These should not be treated as a single official district total.

For 2024, the Belize tourism area recorded 104 hotels with 1,028 rooms. San Pedro had 304 hotels and 3,667 rooms, while Caye Caulker recorded 143 hotels and 1,195 rooms.

San Pedro shows the largest accommodation base of the three areas. Its hotel count increased from 181 in 2022 to 304 in 2024, while room supply increased from 2,412 to 3,667 over the same period.

Caye Caulker also expanded, moving from 126 hotels and 907 rooms in 2022 to 143 hotels and 1,195 rooms in 2024.

San Pedro Adds New Visitor Infrastructure in 2026

Tourism development is not limited to airports and hotels.

The Belize Tourism Board confirmed the opening of the San Pedro Artisans Market on Nurse Shark Street in February 2026. The facility was completed in January.

It contains five newly built kiosks, with two units in each kiosk, creating space for as many as 10 vendors.

The official project is designed to give artisans an organised place to sell handmade goods, souvenirs and locally produced crafts while giving visitors another way to engage with the local community.

Five New US Markets Are Scheduled to Gain Direct Belize Flights

Air access is set for a significant change during the final quarter of 2026.

The Belize Tourism Board announced that BermudAir will connect BZE with Fort Lauderdale, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, Tampa Bay and the Orlando area.

Fort Lauderdale is scheduled to start first on 26 October 2026, followed by the other US routes between 18 and 21 December. The airline plans to use Embraer E190 aircraft.

The routes matter beyond Belize District itself. Visitors entering through BZE can continue towards San Pedro, Caye Caulker and destinations throughout Belize.

Guatemala City Connection Adds a Regional Travel Link

BermudAir is also scheduled to start a Belize City–Guatemala City nonstop service on 19 December 2026.

According to BTB, the service will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It adds another international connection through BZE and strengthens Belize’s regional air links with Central America.

Winnipeg Gives Belize a New Canadian Gateway

Canada will also gain another direct link.

WestJet is scheduled to begin a nonstop Winnipeg–Belize service on 14 December 2026, operating once weekly between Winnipeg Richardson International Airport and Philip Goldson International Airport.

BTB states that the Winnipeg service will complement WestJet’s existing Belize connections from Toronto and Calgary.
