The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) wants to pursue Chiang Mai as one of Thailand’s premier tourism destinations for sustainable practices and has decided to launch the “Amazing Chiang Mai Green Guide Fest 2026” for this purpose. The first edition of this Festival will be held from 28th to 30th August, 2026, at the Railway Park in Chiang Mai. The Festival will focus on eco-friendly travel and local creativity along with responsible businesses and community based tourism practices, and strengthen the Chiang Mai Prototype, an initiative to develop a tourism supply chain that is more strong and sustainable
The event will showcase how green tourism can create new opportunities for communities, businesses and travellers while supporting Chiang Mai’s ambition to become a globally recognised green destination. Through sustainable products, local food experiences, cultural activities and responsible tourism innovations, the festival aims to demonstrate a new direction for Thailand’s tourism industry.

The Amazing Chiang Mai Green Guide Fest 2026 will bring together tourism businesses, local communities, creative entrepreneurs and visitors through six specially designed activity zones. Each area will focus on different aspects of sustainability, showing how environmental responsibility can become a practical part of modern travel.
The festival will combine tourism promotion with sustainability education by presenting innovative solutions, local knowledge and environmentally conscious experiences. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Chiang Mai’s unique identity while discovering how responsible tourism can support economic growth and protect natural and cultural resources.

The event will also follow Green Event principles, ensuring that the festival itself reduces environmental impact through responsible resource management, waste reduction and carbon-control measures. This approach reflects Thailand’s wider goal of developing tourism that balances economic benefits with environmental protection.
One of the main attractions at the festival will be the Sustainability Showcase, which will introduce visitors and tourism professionals to sustainable tourism standards, innovations and responsible business practices.
The showcase will feature sustainability frameworks including STGs STAR and CF-Hotels, providing examples of how tourism operators can improve their environmental performance and create more responsible visitor experiences.
Interactive demonstrations and workshops will allow participants to understand sustainable tourism practices in a simple and practical way. The activities will focus on helping businesses adopt greener operations while encouraging travellers to make more environmentally friendly choices.
By presenting successful sustainability models, the showcase will support Chiang Mai’s transition towards a tourism system where businesses, communities and visitors work together to protect the destination’s natural and cultural heritage.
The Sustainable Local Wisdom zone will celebrate Chiang Mai’s reputation as a creative city by highlighting traditional knowledge, handmade products, sustainable design and wellness experiences.
The area will feature locally developed products and services that reflect the province’s cultural identity while connecting traditional craftsmanship with modern sustainable lifestyles.
Visitors will discover how local communities are transforming heritage skills into contemporary products that support economic opportunities while preserving cultural values. Sustainable crafts, creative designs and wellness-focused experiences will demonstrate how tourism can encourage community development.
The showcase will also highlight Chiang Mai’s growing position as a destination where creativity, culture and sustainability come together to create meaningful travel experiences.
Food will play a major role at the festival through the Sustainable Gastronomy zone, which will bring together more than 35 local food and beverage businesses.
The area will showcase Chiang Mai’s diverse culinary culture while promoting environmentally responsible food practices. Local restaurants, producers and chefs will demonstrate how sustainable ingredients, local sourcing and traditional cooking methods can create unique dining experiences.
A special Farm-to-Table Showcase will allow visitors to experience dishes prepared by local chefs using regional ingredients. The activity will provide 20 selected opportunities for visitors who spend 500 Baht or more at the event.
Through sustainable gastronomy, the festival aims to strengthen connections between farmers, food businesses and travellers while promoting local products and reducing environmental impact within the food supply chain.
The Sustainable Business Exchange zone will provide a platform for tourism operators, community groups and green businesses to connect, share ideas and develop future partnerships.
The programme will encourage collaboration between different sectors of Chiang Mai’s tourism industry. Businesses will be able to exchange knowledge about sustainable practices, discuss challenges and explore new opportunities for responsible tourism development.
The initiative supports the Chiang Mai Prototype by helping tourism stakeholders improve their sustainability standards and create stronger connections across the tourism supply chain.
By encouraging cooperation between communities and businesses, the event aims to build a tourism ecosystem that delivers long-term benefits for both visitors and local residents.
The festival will also celebrate Chiang Mai’s rich cultural heritage through eco-friendly entertainment and traditional performances.
The Eco-Friendly Music & Cultural Performance zone will feature two cultural shows every day, including Bo Sang umbrella dance, Fon Ngiao, Sabad Chai drumming, tea-leaf picking dance and Fon Oeng performances.
Alongside cultural displays, visitors will enjoy live music performances featuring popular artists throughout the three-day event. The entertainment programme will include performances from Serious Bacon, Khian Khai and Vanich on 28 August, T_047 and Mirrr on 29 August, and Earth Patravee and Moving and Cut on 30 August.
The combination of cultural heritage and sustainable practices will showcase Chiang Mai as a destination where tradition and modern environmental responsibility can exist together.
Before the main festival, TAT organised the “Green Guide, New Vibes” forum on 21 August to discuss the future direction of sustainable tourism in Chiang Mai.
The forum brought together sustainability specialists and tourism experts to examine how Chiang Mai’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage, creative industries and wellness strengths can be developed into sustainable travel experiences.
Discussions focused on creating tourism journeys that provide meaningful experiences while supporting local communities and protecting the environment.
The forum highlighted the importance of cooperation between government organisations, businesses and communities in building a tourism model that creates balanced growth and long-term value.
The Amazing Chiang Mai Green Guide Fest 2026 is being organised as a Green Event and has received Carbon Neutral Event certification from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization.
The festival will introduce several environmental measures, including waste separation, reduced plastic consumption, efficient resource use and carbon footprint management.
The estimated carbon footprint of the event is around 350 tonnes, representing approximately a 50 per cent reduction compared with the previous year’s festival.
To support cleaner transportation, electric vehicle shuttle services will operate on two routes connecting San Pa Khoi Market and Kad Luang with Railway Park.
These initiatives demonstrate how large-scale tourism events can reduce environmental impacts while maintaining strong visitor engagement.
TAT expects the three-day festival to attract at least 15,000 Thai and international visitors. The event is projected to generate more than 20 million Baht in direct spending, while contributing over 100 million Baht in tourism revenue across Chiang Mai.
Beyond immediate economic benefits, the festival represents a long-term strategy to strengthen Chiang Mai’s tourism industry through sustainable development.
The event supports local businesses, promotes community participation and creates new opportunities for tourism operators adopting greener practices.
By combining environmental responsibility with economic growth, Chiang Mai is positioning itself as a destination ready to meet the changing expectations of global travellers.
The Chiang Mai Prototype is part of TAT’s Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs) framework, which aims to improve tourism standards and create more balanced destination development.
Following the introduction of the Krabi Prototype in 2025, TAT expanded the approach to northern Thailand through the Chiang Mai Prototype in 2026.
The initiative works with government agencies, private-sector partners and local communities to improve tourism businesses, encourage sustainability standards and strengthen the overall tourism supply chain.
Through events such as Amazing Chiang Mai Green Guide Fest 2026, Thailand continues to develop a new generation of tourism experiences focused on environmental protection, community empowerment and responsible growth.
Chiang Mai’s green tourism movement reflects a wider transformation in global travel, where visitors increasingly seek destinations that offer authentic experiences while preserving the planet for future generations.
