El Salvador is having a highly productive tourism year, seeing an influx of international tourists with the country surpassing 50 per cent of its 2026 target even before the midway point of the year has arrived. According to the statistics published in July, El Salvador recorded 2.5 million international tourists from January to June, which amounted to 59.5 per cent of its target of 4.2 million tourists for the year. However, the trend didn’t stop there. In July, the number of international tourists was up to 2.88 million, and the holiday season of August witnessed a surge of domestic as well as international tourists.
The numbers are giving El Salvador a significantly larger presence in Central American tourism.

In 2025, the country recorded more than 4.12 million international arrivals, placing it second among destinations counted within the Central American Integration System’s regional statistics, behind the Dominican Republic. Guatemala and Costa Rica recorded fewer international arrivals during the same period.
The 2026 performance is building on that position.

Between January and May alone, El Salvador received more than 2.1 million international visitors, a 33% increase over the same period in 2025 and 111% above the corresponding 2019 level.
For tourism operators, hotels, airlines and attractions, that means the visitor economy is moving into another high-volume phase.
One of the most striking parts of El Salvador’s tourism surge is where the visitors are coming from.
Guatemala was the largest source market during the first five months of 2026, accounting for approximately 917,000 visitors, up 64% year on year. The United States followed with 540,000 visitors, while Honduras contributed 396,000, representing 30% growth.
The geography makes regional travel particularly important.
Visitors from neighbouring countries can reach El Salvador by road as well as air, making short breaks, family trips and weekend travel easier to organise.
That is especially valuable for destinations outside the capital.
San Salvador remains a major tourism hub, with its historic centre becoming one of the country’s most visited urban attractions.
During the August holiday period, the Historic Centre recorded 717,285 visitors between 1 and 5 August, placing it among the country’s leading destinations during the peak period.
The area combines restored historic architecture, museums, churches, public spaces, restaurants and cultural attractions, giving travellers an urban alternative to El Salvador’s better-known beaches.
For international visitors, it also provides an accessible introduction to the country’s history and contemporary culture.
Then comes the Pacific coast.
La Libertad and the wider Surf City corridor remain central to El Salvador’s tourism strategy, particularly for travellers interested in surfing, beaches, seafood and coastal accommodation.
The country’s tourism development plans for 2026 also include continued investment in Surf City 1 and Surf City 2, alongside projects at Costa del Sol and other destinations.
This gives El Salvador a tourism portfolio that extends from city breaks to beach holidays, while routes such as the Ruta de las Flores add mountains, small towns, food and cultural experiences.
The country’s peak August travel period provided another clear snapshot of demand.
Between 1 and 6 August, El Salvador received 95,159 foreign tourists, up 5.2% from the same period in 2025. Guatemala supplied more than 32,000 of those visitors, followed by more than 31,000 from the United States and over 19,000 from Honduras.
Across public tourism sites, the numbers were even larger.
More than 2.04 million visits were recorded at public sites between 1 and 5 August, while Sivarland alone recorded 910,000 visitors.
The growth is not restricted to San Salvador and La Libertad.
El Salvador is promoting destinations such as the Ruta de las Flores, the highlands of Chalatenango and tourism corridors along the Pan-American Highway.
That matters because higher visitor numbers can be distributed across more communities.
A traveller can combine San Salvador’s historic centre with a coastal stay in La Libertad, explore coffee-growing highlands around the Ruta de las Flores and continue towards Santa Ana or other cultural and nature destinations.
For a compact country, that creates a remarkably varied itinerary.
International aviation is another part of the expansion.
Improved connectivity is helping El Salvador reach markets beyond neighbouring Central American countries, while the United States remains one of its most important visitor sources.
The growth of European markets is also being monitored closely, with tourism officials highlighting increases from Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany alongside markets such as Canada, Colombia and Mexico.
More air connectivity creates opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators and attractions well beyond the capital.
