El Salvador is strengthening its air links with Europe as new and returning services increase connectivity with Spain. The expansion has gathered momentum throughout 2026, supported by a revised bilateral aviation framework, new airline operations and continued investment in airport infrastructure.

Iberojet’s arrival has introduced direct connectivity involving Madrid and Barcelona, while Avianca operated a seasonal Madrid service during the northern summer. Air Europa is scheduled to enter the market in December. Alongside Iberia, these developments are broadening the country’s links with Europe at a time when El Salvador is also recording growth in international tourism.

Official figures show 3.2 million international visitors entered El Salvador between January and August 2026, while international tourism generated approximately US$2.88 billion during the period.

El Salvador Builds Stronger Air Links With Europe

Spain has become central to El Salvador’s European aviation expansion.

The development is being driven by a combination of airline services and regulatory changes. The updated bilateral air-services framework between El Salvador and Spain permits greater flight frequencies, giving airlines more flexibility to introduce or expand services.

During 2026, Madrid has remained the principal European gateway. However, the introduction of direct connectivity with Barcelona has added another important Spanish destination.

Iberojet entered the Salvadoran market in September. Avianca operated seasonal Madrid flights during the summer. Air Europa is scheduled to start Madrid services in December, while Iberia already contributes to European connectivity.

Together, these developments are creating a broader aviation bridge between Central America and Europe.

Iberojet Opens New Madrid And Barcelona Opportunities

Iberojet began operations in El Salvador on 14 September 2026, marking an important addition to the country’s international aviation network.

The airline’s first arriving service came from Madrid, while its first El Salvador departure to Barcelona operated on the same day.

According to official information from El Salvador’s Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma, Barcelona became a direct destination from El Salvador for the first time through the new operation.

Iberojet is scheduled to operate two weekly frequencies.

The Madrid and Barcelona routes had previously been officially launched on 1 July 2026. Authorities identified several areas that could benefit from the connections, including tourism, business, investment, cultural exchange and links with Salvadorans living abroad.

The addition of Barcelona is particularly notable because it extends direct Spanish connectivity beyond Madrid.

Spain And El Salvador Double Permitted Flight Frequencies

Airline expansion has been supported by a major change to the bilateral aviation framework between El Salvador and Spain.

In November 2025, the two countries updated arrangements that had originated in 1997.

Under the revised framework, permitted frequencies increased from seven to 14 weekly frequencies for each country.

That represents a 100% increase in the permitted frequency ceiling.

The agreement should not be interpreted as meaning that airlines automatically operate 14 services every week. Instead, it provides an expanded regulatory framework under which airlines can introduce additional capacity subject to their schedules, authorisations and commercial plans.

For El Salvador, the expanded framework creates more room for future connectivity with Spain and, through Spanish hubs, other European markets.

Air Europa Prepares For December Entry

Another significant stage in the expansion is expected on 17 December 2026, when Air Europa is scheduled to begin direct services between Madrid and El Salvador.

Official plans call for three weekly frequencies.

The arrival of Air Europa would bring the number of airlines providing European connectivity to El Salvador to four: Avianca, Iberia, Iberojet and Air Europa.

Madrid’s role extends beyond point-to-point travel between Spain and El Salvador. Its position as a major European aviation hub gives passengers opportunities to connect onwards to destinations across Europe and Africa.

This connectivity can therefore expand the range of potential itineraries available to travellers starting or ending their journeys in El Salvador.

Avianca Added Seasonal Madrid Capacity

Avianca has also played a role in El Salvador’s European aviation development during 2026.

The airline’s direct San Salvador–Madrid service was scheduled between 15 June and 15 September 2026, providing four weekly frequencies.

The seasonal operation used Airbus A330 aircraft operated by Wamos Air.

The service added capacity during the northern summer travel period and formed another component of the wider expansion between El Salvador and Spain.

Taken alongside Iberojet’s entry and Air Europa’s planned December launch, the operation demonstrates how European connectivity has developed through several airline initiatives rather than a single new route.

Barcelona Gives Travellers Another Direct Spanish Gateway

Barcelona represents one of the most distinctive additions to El Salvador’s international network in 2026.

Madrid already has an established role in air connectivity between El Salvador and Spain. Direct Barcelona connectivity therefore broadens the geographic reach of the market.

For travellers, an additional Spanish gateway can provide more options when organising trips between El Salvador and Europe.

It can also support travel in both directions. European visitors gain another direct access point to El Salvador, while Salvadoran travellers have an additional gateway into Spain.

However, the new service should not yet be directly credited with a specific increase in European tourist arrivals. Such an assessment would require official market-level arrival statistics covering an adequate operating period.

International Tourism Reaches 3.2 Million Visitors

The aviation expansion is occurring alongside significant international tourism activity.

Official figures show that El Salvador received more than 4.1 million international visitors during 2025.

Between January and August 2026, the country welcomed 3.2 million international visitors.

International tourism generated approximately US$2.88 billion in foreign-exchange earnings during those eight months. That represented an increase of approximately 12% compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.

These figures provide important context for the expansion of air connectivity. Rising visitor activity increases the importance of sufficient aviation capacity, efficient airport infrastructure and diversified international access.

Airport Modernisation Supports International Growth

Air connectivity cannot expand sustainably without sufficient airport capacity.

El Salvador has therefore been advancing expansion and modernisation work at El Salvador International Airport San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez.

According to official information, the projects are intended to increase operational capacity and help the airport accommodate growing passenger demand, additional international services and new airlines.

Regulatory preparation has also accompanied the arrival of new operators.

Before Iberojet launched commercial services, El Salvador’s Civil Aviation Authority completed the necessary technical and regulatory evaluation. In August 2026, Iberojet received its Foreign Air Operator Permit and required operating specifications.

The process demonstrates that airline expansion is being accompanied by aviation oversight and infrastructure development.

European Connectivity Creates Wider Travel Possibilities

The expansion of links with Spain has implications beyond Spanish tourism alone.

Madrid provides onward connections into numerous European markets. Consequently, direct services between El Salvador and Madrid can form one segment of longer journeys involving other destinations across Europe.

Barcelona provides a second major Spanish gateway and broadens the available route structure.

For European travellers considering El Salvador, expanded air connectivity can reduce dependence on more complicated itineraries involving additional stops. For Salvadoran passengers, the growing network provides additional choices for reaching Spain and connecting onwards.

The effect will depend on airline schedules, seasonal capacity, fares and the long-term sustainability of individual routes.

2026 Marks A Significant Expansion Of El Salvador’s European Network

El Salvador’s European aviation story in 2026 is ultimately about network diversification and additional capacity.

The revised Spain agreement doubled permitted weekly frequencies from seven to 14 for each country. Avianca added seasonal Madrid capacity. Iberojet introduced Madrid and Barcelona operations in September, including El Salvador’s first direct Barcelona destination. Air Europa is scheduled to begin three weekly Madrid services in December, while Iberia remains part of the wider European connectivity landscape.

At the same time, official tourism indicators show 3.2 million international visitors and approximately US$2.88 billion in tourism earnings through August 2026.

Taken together, these developments show aviation capacity, airport infrastructure and international tourism expanding in parallel. Spain remains at the centre of that European connection, but the broader significance lies in giving El Salvador more gateways through which travellers can reach Europe and through which European travellers can discover El Salvador.
