Zurich keeps world’s smartest city title for 7th year in a row, fueling Switzerland tourism. The Swiss city of Zurich has once again taken first place in the IMD Smart City Index for the seventh year running, fueling speculations that Switzerland will remain a favored destination for years to come. Experts believe that the emphasis on the wellbeing of the citizens and appropriate infrastructure, as well as other key factors, will make cities attractive to foreign visitors.

The latest ranking by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) evaluated cities based on economic and technological infrastructure, environmental performance, inclusiveness, and quality of life. The assessment was largely based on residents’ experiences and perceptions, reflecting how effectively cities are addressing everyday challenges while creating modern urban environments.

Zurich became the only city in the ranking to achieve an AAA overall Smart City Rating, reinforcing Switzerland’s growing reputation for innovation, sustainability, and high-quality urban living. The achievement also strengthens Zurich’s appeal as a tourism destination, where efficient transport, walkable neighbourhoods, cultural attractions, and environmental planning combine to create a seamless visitor experience.

Emerging cities reveal changing global smart tourism trends

The 2026 rankings also highlighted significant improvements from cities outside the traditional leaders. Several destinations recorded major progress, showing that investment in technology, infrastructure, and urban services can quickly reshape global perceptions.

Washington, D.C., United States, recorded one of the biggest improvements, climbing 23 places to reach 39th position. The city’s progress reflects growing efforts to improve digital services, mobility solutions, and urban experiences for both residents and visitors.

AlUla, Saudi Arabia, also recorded a major rise, moving up 27 places to reach 85th position. The improvement reflects the destination’s wider transformation through infrastructure development, sustainability initiatives, and tourism-focused growth strategies.

Boston, United States, became the highest-ranked American city in the 2026 index, reaching 35th place. Its position reflects the importance of technology, innovation, education, and infrastructure in creating competitive urban destinations.

Housing and congestion remain challenges despite smart city success

Although Zurich achieved the highest global ranking, the index also identified areas requiring continued attention. Affordable housing emerged as the biggest concern among Zurich residents, with 82 percent identifying it as a priority.

Road congestion was another major issue, highlighted by 60 percent of respondents, while 47 percent pointed to unemployment as an area requiring improvement.

These challenges reflect a wider global urban trend. Across all 148 cities included in the IMD Smart City Index, affordable housing was identified as the most urgent concern. Road congestion and security followed as other major priorities.

The findings demonstrate that becoming a smart city is not only about technology adoption. Successful urban destinations must balance innovation with affordability, accessibility, sustainability, and social inclusion.

Zurich’s smart city success enhances tourism experiences

Beyond its ranking, Zurich continues to attract travellers through its combination of historic charm and modern efficiency. The city’s smart infrastructure allows visitors to explore cultural landmarks, natural landscapes, and urban attractions with ease.

The historic Altstadt, or Old Town, remains one of Zurich’s most popular areas, featuring narrow cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and famous landmarks including Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches. Visitors can also discover historic guild houses located along the Limmat River.

At Bürkliplatz, travellers can board boats for scenic journeys across Lake Zurich, offering views of the city skyline, surrounding landscapes, and the Swiss Alps.

Art and culture remain central to Zurich’s tourism appeal. The Kunsthaus Zürich attracts visitors with its extensive collection featuring renowned artists including Alberto Giacometti, Claude Monet, and Pablo Picasso.

The city also continues to attract food-focused travellers through its famous Swiss culinary experiences, including traditional chocolate and fondue.

Zurich retains the title of the world’s smartest city for the seventh year running, showcasing how far innovation, sustainability and smart infrastructure can go to boost the appeal of Switzerland as a tourist destination.

As per the 2026 IMD Smart City Index, smart city development is set to enhance the quality of life for locals as well as make things easier for tourists looking to explore this European country.

Zurich’s seventh consecutive victory in the Smart City Index highlights a growing connection between urban innovation and tourism competitiveness. As destinations worldwide invest in smarter infrastructure, the cities that successfully improve daily life for residents are increasingly becoming the places travellers want to explore.
