India is preparing for a major transport and tourism connectivity push as Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicates crucial sections of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and flags off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train on 17 July 2026. The expressway has been designed to reduce travel between Delhi and Katra from approximately 14 hours to nearly six hours. It will also shorten the Delhi-Amritsar journey from around eight hours to four hours, improving access to northern India’s important religious, cultural and commercial destinations.

The 667-kilometre Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is intended to transform road travel between the National Capital Region, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The corridor’s planned six-hour Delhi-Katra journey represents a reduction of around eight hours compared with the existing 14-hour road trip.
The improvement could be particularly important for pilgrims travelling to Katra, the principal gateway to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. Shorter road journeys may allow travellers to plan more flexible itineraries, reduce overnight stops and combine religious visits with wider tourism experiences in Jammu and Kashmir.
Delhi-Amritsar travel is expected to fall from approximately eight hours to four hours once the required corridor sections become fully operational. That could strengthen weekend tourism, family travel and business mobility between Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

The Prime Minister’s programme covers six packages of the four-lane greenfield expressway. Packages 1 to 5 extend for 157.92 kilometres and have been developed at an estimated cost of ₹9,680 crore. Package 6 adds another 30.9 kilometres in Punjab, bringing the combined length of the sections highlighted for dedication to approximately 188.82 kilometres.
The expressway is fully access-controlled across the Haryana packages, meaning vehicles will enter and exit through designated interchanges rather than through unrestricted roadside junctions. This format can support smoother traffic movement, reduce conflicting vehicle flows and create more predictable journey times.

Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity onboard by combining hydrogen with oxygen. The official project description states that water vapour is the only operational by-product, resulting in zero carbon emissions from the train during operation.
The train features a 3,200-horsepower propulsion system, placing it among the most powerful hydrogen-powered passenger trainsets developed globally. Its 10-coach configuration also makes it one of the longest trains in this emerging category.
The Indian Railways Annual Report and Accounts 2024–25 previously described the project as a pilot initiative for the Sonipat-Jind section. The system uses hydrogen fuel cells as its primary energy source and batteries to meet peak power requirements.
Hydrogen trains could offer an alternative for selected routes where continuous overhead electrification is difficult or financially demanding. Unlike conventional electric trains, the train generates electricity onboard and therefore does not depend entirely on overhead wires throughout the route.
Compared with diesel-powered services, hydrogen trains can eliminate local exhaust emissions and operate with lower noise levels. They may therefore be suitable for regional routes, environmentally sensitive areas and sections where railway authorities seek to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The environmental impact still depends on how the hydrogen is produced. Green hydrogen, generated using renewable electricity, offers greater emissions benefits than hydrogen produced through fossil-fuel-intensive processes.
Indian Railways has described the project as an important demonstration of hydrogen technology rather than evidence of an immediate nationwide replacement of diesel or electric trains. Its performance, fuel supply arrangements, maintenance requirements and operating costs will help determine where the technology may be deployed in the future.
The programme includes national highway projects worth more than ₹12,470 crore across Haryana. Among them is the 33.81-kilometre Ambala-Kala Amb Highway on NH-7 and NH-344, designed to improve connections between Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
The highway could support tourist movement towards Himachal Pradesh’s hill destinations while improving industrial access to the Kala Amb area. Better road links may also ease journeys between Ambala, Panchkula and southern Himachal Pradesh.
Another major development is the 40.60-kilometre Jind-Gohana Greenfield Highway on NH-352A. It is expected to reduce travel between Jind and Gohana from roughly two hours to approximately 40 minutes.
The project will strengthen connections towards Rohtak, Panipat and Delhi-NCR. Modi is also scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the 24.27-kilometre Hansi-Barwala highway upgrade and dedicate an elevated railway track in Kurukshetra, intended to remove congestion around railway crossings and improve urban road safety.
Chandigarh forms another major part of the infrastructure programme, with projects valued at more than ₹4,700 crore covering healthcare, education and transport.
At the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Modi is scheduled to inaugurate an Advanced Mother and Child Centre and an Advanced Neurosciences Centre. The 300-bed mother and child facility is designed for high-risk pregnancies, critically ill newborns and children requiring specialist treatment.
The programme also includes the foundation stone for a 150-bed critical care block under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission.
Road projects include a six-lane greenfield highway connecting IT City with Kurali in Mohali district. It is expected to improve movement between Mohali, Kharar and Kurali while strengthening access across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
A 10.3-kilometre PR-7 Spur will connect the proposed Zirakpur Bypass with Aerocity and help long-distance traffic avoid congested urban sections.
In Jalandhar, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for rail and road projects worth more than ₹5,470 crore.
The programme includes 75 redeveloped railway stations across 20 states under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Developed at a combined cost of approximately ₹1,570 crore, the stations have received upgraded passenger facilities while incorporating elements of local culture, architecture and heritage.
Jalandhar Cantonment is among the stations included. The redevelopment could improve passenger comfort and support smoother connections for travellers moving across Punjab.
Modi will also inaugurate the Daulatpur Chowk-Kartoli rail line, built for approximately ₹830 crore as part of the Nangal Dam-Talwara-Mukerian project. It will improve connections between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and strengthen access to destinations including Shri Anandpur Sahib and Maa Chintpurni Temple.
New Kartoli-Ambala and Amritsar-Varanasi services will further connect religious, cultural and commercial centres across northern India.
The transport programme brings together expressways, regional highways, modern railway stations and cleaner train technology. Its strongest immediate tourism impact is likely to come from reduced road travel times and better access to northern India’s pilgrimage destinations.
Travellers planning a Delhi-Katra journey should not rely exclusively on the headline six-hour estimate until the complete operational status of their intended route is confirmed. They should check official highway updates, tolling arrangements, interchange locations and weather conditions, particularly when continuing towards Jammu and the mountainous areas around Katra.
The same caution applies to the hydrogen train. The launch represents a significant technological milestone, but passengers should verify the service schedule, booking arrangements, stops and commercial operating dates through Indian Railways.
Together, the projects signal a wider attempt to link infrastructure investment with tourism, trade, healthcare and regional development. Faster roads can reduce journey times, while modern stations and new rail services can make multimodal travel more convenient across northern India.
