China, Japan and other major Asian markets are driving South Korea’s tourism growth in 2026, helping the country welcome 10.7 million international visitors during the first half of the year. Supported by strong demand for Korean culture, expanding air connectivity and diverse travel experiences, South Korea recorded a 21.3 percent increase in overseas arrivals compared with the same period in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic tourism levels and entering a new phase of inbound tourism expansion.

The results underline the continued recovery of global travel while demonstrating South Korea’s growing ability to attract both first-time and repeat international visitors through its combination of culture, entertainment, shopping, gastronomy and regional experiences.

Inbound travel maintains strong monthly momentum

June continued the positive trend, with South Korea recording 1.99 million international arrivals during the month. The total was 23.1 percent higher than in June 2025, reflecting sustained demand across major source markets.

The steady rise in monthly arrivals points to consistent international interest rather than short-term seasonal growth. Airlines have restored and expanded services across Asia and other regions, making travel to South Korea more accessible while supporting higher visitor volumes throughout the year.

Improved connectivity has also encouraged greater flexibility for leisure travelers, business visitors and participants attending meetings, exhibitions and international events.

China remains South Korea’s biggest visitor market

China once again led all inbound tourism markets during June, contributing 649,582 visitors and maintaining its position as South Korea’s largest international source market.

Japan followed as the second-largest market with 348,216 visitors, while Taiwan ranked third with 223,127 arrivals. Together, these neighboring markets continued to account for a significant share of the country’s inbound tourism activity.

Visitor numbers from long-haul destinations also remained encouraging. South Korea welcomed 219,948 travelers from the Americas during June, while European arrivals reached 119,445.

Among the leading markets, China posted the strongest annual growth, with arrivals increasing by 36.2 percent. Taiwan also delivered impressive growth of 35.3 percent, highlighting the continued recovery of travel demand across East Asia.

The healthy mix of regional and international visitors provides South Korea with a more balanced tourism base as the industry continues to expand.

Regional airports gain greater importance

Although Incheon International Airport remains the country’s primary gateway, international arrivals through regional airports increased at an even faster pace during June.

Around 1.72 million overseas travelers entered South Korea by air during the month, with the majority arriving through airports serving the Seoul metropolitan area.

However, airports outside the capital region handled 395,246 international visitors, representing a 42.5 percent increase compared with June last year.

The growth demonstrates the success of efforts to improve direct international access to regional destinations, allowing overseas visitors to explore more parts of the country without relying exclusively on Seoul as their entry point.

Expanded international services have made destinations known for beaches, mountains, traditional culture and local cuisine more accessible while helping distribute tourism benefits across regional economies.

The increasing role of regional airports is expected to support long-term tourism development by encouraging more balanced visitor flows throughout the country.

International visitor spending reaches new milestone

The rise in visitor arrivals has been accompanied by a significant increase in tourism spending.

Foreign travelers spent KRW 2.05 trillion, equivalent to approximately USD 1.4 billion, through overseas-issued credit and debit cards during June. It was the second consecutive month in which international visitor spending exceeded the KRW 2 trillion mark.

For the first half of 2026, cumulative overseas visitor card spending reached KRW 10.04 trillion, marking a 50.8 percent increase over the corresponding period in 2025.

The figures indicate that visitors are not only arriving in greater numbers but are also spending more during their trips. Accommodation, restaurants, shopping, transportation, entertainment and tourism activities have all benefited from the increase in visitor expenditure.

The milestone was achieved much earlier than in the previous year, when foreign visitor card spending crossed KRW 10 trillion only in September. Reaching the same level by June reflects the accelerated pace of tourism growth in 2026.

Cultural tourism continues to shape travel demand

South Korea’s expanding global influence through entertainment and popular culture remains one of the country’s strongest tourism assets.

International interest in K-pop, Korean television dramas, cinema, fashion, skincare products and food continues to inspire travelers to experience the destination in person. Visitors increasingly seek experiences connected to Korean lifestyle, from exploring famous neighborhoods and cultural districts to sampling regional cuisine and attending festivals.

The country’s tourism offerings have also become more diverse, combining heritage attractions with modern experiences. Historic palaces, traditional villages, museums and UNESCO-listed sites complement vibrant shopping districts, wellness attractions, technology experiences and contemporary entertainment venues.

Regional destinations are attracting greater attention as travelers look beyond Seoul for authentic cultural experiences, scenic landscapes and outdoor activities. This growing interest is supporting tourism businesses across the country while encouraging longer visitor stays.

Outlook remains positive

South Korea’s strong first-half performance provides a solid foundation for continued tourism growth during the remainder of 2026.

Ongoing expansion of international flight capacity, improving regional accessibility and sustained demand from key Asian markets are expected to support additional visitor growth in the coming months.

At the same time, rising international spending and increasing interest in destinations beyond the capital indicate that the tourism sector is becoming more diversified and economically valuable.

Having surpassed 10.7 million international visitors within six months, South Korea has moved well beyond post-pandemic recovery. The country’s combination of efficient transport infrastructure, globally recognized cultural appeal, expanding regional tourism and strong visitor spending positions it for another successful year as one of Asia’s most competitive international travel destinations.
