India Passport Mobility Gains Big as Visa Access Expands Across Global Destinations in 2026

In terms of the mobility of India passport, the latest September 2026 Passport Index shows that at present, there is high mobility in terms of international travel. At present, Indian passport holders can get access to 25 countries without a visa, 40 countries via visa on arrival and another five countries via electronic travel authorisation. According to the September 2026 index, the Indian passport holds 74th place in the Passport Power ranking with a mobility of 70. These numbers represent the current level of travel access for the Indian citizens across the regions of Asia, Africa, Caribbean and internationally. The issue of visa-free, visa on arrival and eTA travel access is very important for Indian tourists, as each type of access implies different preparation before and during travel.

25 Destinations Offer Visa-Free Access

Indian passport holders currently have visa-free access to 25 destinations in the Passport Index September 2026 data. The list includes a mixture of island destinations, Asian markets and African countries.

Among the destinations listed are Angola, Barbados, Bhutan, Dominica, Fiji, The Gambia, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Macao, Maldives, Mauritius, Micronesia, Nepal, the Palestinian Territories, the Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Vanuatu and several other destinations.

For Indian travellers, visa-free access can simplify holiday planning because an advance visa application is not required under the applicable conditions. However, permitted stay lengths vary considerably, from short visits to periods of up to several months.

Travellers should therefore check the specific entry conditions of their destination before booking flights or accommodation.

40 Visa-on-Arrival Corridors Remain Available

The updated figures also show 40 destinations offering visa-on-arrival access to Indian passport holders. This category remains an important part of India’s international travel network because visitors can obtain the required entry permission after reaching the destination rather than securing a conventional visa beforehand.

Destinations listed in the current Passport Index data include Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Jordan, Laos, Madagascar, Marshall Islands, Palau, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Timor-Leste and Tuvalu, among others.

Several destinations combine visa-on-arrival access with an eVisa option. Madagascar, for example, is listed with both eVisa and visa-on-arrival arrangements, while Sierra Leone offers both options for Indian travellers.

The distinction matters because visa-on-arrival does not necessarily mean unrestricted entry. Travellers may still need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, onward travel arrangements, sufficient funds or other supporting documents.

Five eTA Gateways Add Digital Travel Access

The September mobility data records five eTA destinations for Indian passport holders. These include Kenya and St Kitts and Nevis, while Sri Lanka is also listed as an eTA destination.

Kenya provides a clear example of how digital travel authorisation is replacing traditional visa processes. The Kenyan government requires visitors who are not exempt to obtain an approved eTA before starting their journey. The authorisation is valid for travel within 90 days of issue, while the permitted stay is determined at the point of entry.

The Kenyan system also requires travellers to submit details including passport information, photographs, itinerary and accommodation information. Applications can be completed through the country’s official online platform.

For Indian tourists, eTA systems therefore provide a digital pre-travel process rather than traditional embassy-based visa applications.

Africa Becomes an Important Mobility Market

Africa remains particularly significant in the evolving travel options available to Indian passport holders.

Kenya’s eTA system provides Indian travellers with access for tourism and other eligible purposes, while destinations such as Rwanda, Senegal, Mauritius and The Gambia currently provide visa-free access under the conditions recorded by Passport Index.

Other African destinations provide visa-on-arrival or digital visa facilities. Madagascar and Sierra Leone, for example, offer visa-on-arrival and eVisa pathways, while Côte d’Ivoire is listed separately under a pre-enrolment system.

These different models show how African destinations are increasingly using digital and simplified border procedures to manage international arrivals.

Caribbean Access Continues to Support Indian Travellers

The Caribbean also contributes to India’s visa-free mobility network.

Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago appear among the destinations providing visa-free access to Indian passport holders in the current dataset.

For Indian holidaymakers, these arrangements create opportunities to plan Caribbean beach holidays, island-hopping trips and longer leisure journeys without obtaining a conventional visa before departure, subject to each country’s individual entry rules.

The range of destinations also illustrates the geographical spread of India’s simplified travel access, extending beyond neighbouring Asian countries.

Visa-Free Does Not Mean Entry Without Conditions

Despite the expanding mobility figures, travellers should not interpret visa-free or visa-on-arrival access as an automatic right of entry.

Passport validity, return or onward tickets, accommodation details, financial evidence, health requirements and maximum stay periods can still apply. Border officials retain responsibility for admission at the destination.

The Passport Index data itself shows considerable differences in permitted stays. Indian citizens can, for example, receive up to 90 days in several visa-free destinations, while Kazakhstan allows 14 days and the Philippines currently lists 14 days.
